Deutz Insiders Double Down as Cologne Restructuring and Defense Pivot Collide

Two supervisory board members at Deutz AG have put their own capital behind the Cologne engine maker's contested transformation, filings show, even as the company weighs sweeping job reductions at its home plant and leans on a recent defense acquisition to shore up margins.
Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter picked up shares worth EUR 53,400.00 at an execution price of EUR 10.68 apiece on Thursday, according to a mandatory disclosure. Dr. Rudolf Maier went further, acquiring stock totaling EUR 99,540.00. Purchases of that kind by supervisory board members are typically read on the trading floor as a vote of confidence in management's long-term strategy.
The insider buying lands against a backdrop of painful adjustment in Deutz's legacy business. Media reports and dpa-AFX indicate the group is preparing restructuring measures at its main Cologne facility, where up to 200 positions could go — with a worst-case scenario of as many as 300 jobs affected. The small internal combustion engine segment is battling noticeably softer demand and mounting competitive pressure.
Talks Underway, Decision Pending
According to WDR, discussions with employee representatives over the planned savings were already in progress, while a final decision from management had yet to be reached. Deutz declined to comment officially. The Handelsblatt had reported that roughly 400 jobs across the company were in question, of which about 100 had already been eliminated or were in the process of being cut. Insider accounts pointed to internal deliberations over the possible loss of up to 300 additional positions, a figure the company would not confirm. Regional reporting from dpa and WDR initially put the planned reduction in the smaller-engine area at between 130 and 200 jobs.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?
The Kölnische Stadt-Anzeiger placed the measures within a broader structural shift: smaller engine lines are being phased out as customer demand from the agricultural and construction machinery sectors stays subdued. That leaves the traditional core business losing momentum, while higher-margin fields such as energy systems and defense are expected to carry the group.
Berenberg Sees Margin Upside in FFG Deal
Industry observers see considerable opportunity in that pivot despite the drag from the legacy segment. Berenberg kept its "Buy" rating on the stock on Wednesday and raised its price target sharply to EUR 16.50 from EUR 13.00. Analyst Lasse Stueben tied the move to the takeover of defense contractor FFG more than a month ago, calling the acquisition a key strategic step that gives Deutz a stronger foothold in the defense sector and structurally improves its margin profile.
The market has already taken note of the tension between operational headwinds and strategic promise. The shares closed Friday's session at EUR 11.01, holding a gain of 30% since the start of the year and trading above their 200-day moving average of EUR 10.43.
Hard evidence on the operating picture and the progress of the overhaul will arrive in a matter of weeks. On November 5, 2026, Deutz publishes its quarterly statement covering the first through third quarters of 2026.
