DroneShield's Backlog Hits Guidance Midpoint, but Jefferies Sees Costs Outrunning Revenue
Published on 10/19/2026 at 12:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deJefferies trimmed its price target on DroneShield on Thursday, and the broker's core concern is arithmetic rather than sentiment: adjusted weekly sales have barely budged year on year, while operating expenses have climbed faster than revenue. The scrutiny lands on spending trends from the first half of fiscal 2026, a period of sharp cost growth that is squeezing margins at the Australian counter-drone specialist.
Confirmation of A$261 million in contracted revenue for fiscal 2026 — squarely inside the A$250 million to A$270 million range the company had guided — did little to reassure the market. That figure represents 35 percent growth on the prior-year comparison, yet without a meaningful pickup in new business to absorb the higher cost base, the margin picture risks clouding further.
Beyond 2026, the Commitments Thin Out
Forward visibility drops off sharply after the current year. DroneShield has A$29 million of revenue locked in for fiscal 2027, with a further A$17 million contracted for 2028 and subsequent years. Those advance agreements give management confidence in planning development and manufacturing capacity, though they leave the medium-term revenue bridge largely dependent on fresh orders.
Some of that pipeline support came roughly three weeks ago, when DroneShield was named among the selected suppliers receiving US Army framework contracts under the Domestic Shield program.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?
Citigroup Crosses, Then Recrosses, the 5% Line
Ownership structure has shifted in parallel. Citigroup Global Markets Australia and affiliated entities of the US financial group disclosed a notifiable stake of 46,964,998 shares, equal to 5.0754 percent of voting rights. The filing was lodged on October 12 and lists October 8 as the holding date. The banks subsequently submitted a notice that the threshold had been crossed back below.
The stake gives the US group a meaningful position in a company whose market capitalization stands at EUR 929.01 million. Shares rose 6.7 percent on Friday to close at EUR 0.9388, a move for which no direct trigger was identified in the market.
Software Push Targets the Installed Base
Operationally, DroneShield is leaning on upgrades to its existing fleet. A software package slated for the fourth quarter — delivered through the Mission Ready Services platform to more than 4,200 active devices in the field — covers detection, identification, tracking and coordinated countermeasures, and will be pushed to systems already deployed.
Among the headline improvements is a 44 percent gain in classification accuracy for thermal imaging cameras. Release of the DroneSentry-C2 control system is scheduled for November 3, 2026, reinforcing the recurring service and software business built on the installed base.
Chart Still Leaning Defensive
The subdued mood is visible in the price. In today's trading the stock is off 0.4 percent at EUR 0.9346, sitting 13 percent below its 50-day moving average. Working through the existing contract book alone is unlikely to sustain a recovery in the quote; the decisive question is whether DroneShield can demonstrate over the coming months that its enlarged cost base is justified by correspondingly dynamic revenue expansion.
