DroneShield's Record Order Book Meets a Market That Won't Bite

DroneShield shares sit 73% below their 52-week high even as contracted FY2026 revenue reaches AUD 251 million and a new CFO is named.

DroneShield closed Friday at EUR 1.01, a level that tells two very different stories depending on which side of the order book you sit. The Australian counter-drone specialist has spent recent weeks stacking up contract wins, expanding its engineering footprint and reshuffling its executive suite — yet the equity sits 73% below its 52-week high of EUR 3.79 and 12% under its 50-day moving average. Since the start of the year, the stock has shed 44%.

Short sellers have been leaning into that disconnect. The short interest ratio climbed to 14.36%, according to media reports, a reading that coverage links to the preceding price weakness while stopping short of calling bearish positioning the sole driver of the recent move.

A Backlog That Keeps Growing

The operational picture looks considerably firmer than the tape suggests. Roughly two weeks ago, DroneShield lifted its secured order volume, with contracted revenue for fiscal 2026 now standing at AUD 251 million. That puts the company inside its own guidance range of AUD 250 million to AUD 270 million. Management has also locked in AUD 46 million in contracted revenue for fiscal 2027 and beyond, giving the group room to scale capacity in step with demand from Western defence forces.

The company's counter-drone systems are finding their way into US military programmes as well. Under the JIATF-401 initiative, DroneShield completed delivery, installation on Infantry Squad Vehicles, acceptance testing and operator training for its DroneSentry-X Mk2 system just over a week ago. A planned contract amendment would add three further units. Modular defence solutions are gaining traction across the sector as unmanned systems rewrite tactical requirements for mobile units.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

Adelaide Lab, First RfRecon Sale

To deepen its own technology pipeline, DroneShield opened a new research and development facility at the Lot Fourteen innovation precinct in Adelaide. The site will focus on software development alongside laboratory work in embedded systems, sensor technology, communications and electronic warfare, with roughly 20 specialist engineering roles to be filled. It complements existing research activity in Sydney and is dedicated to development rather than manufacturing.

On the commercial front, the company notched a first for its next-generation product line. Media reports indicate DroneShield received its inaugural order for RfRecon, an AI-powered reconnaissance device, from an existing Western European military customer. Delivery is slated for completion by the end of 2026 — a win industry observers read as validation of the company's evolving sensor portfolio.

New CFO Takes the Reins

Leadership is shifting too. DroneShield named Rebecca Lowde as its next Chief Financial Officer, effective 2 November 2026. She succeeds Carla Balanco, who departs after more than eight years with the company. Lowde brings three decades of experience spanning chief executive and senior finance roles, including a stint at software firm MYOB, where she oversaw debt refinancing and operating earnings growth. Her track record in major corporate transactions is expected to support DroneShield as it scales its global operations.

With a filled order book, an expanded R&D base and a seasoned finance chief in place, DroneShield is positioning itself for its next growth phase. Whether that translates into profitable execution on its contracted work is the question the coming quarters will answer.
