DroneShield's Recovery Rally Faces Its Toughest Test Yet
Published on 08/07/2026 at 20:11 | Redaktion boerse-global.deThe counter-drone specialist has clawed back a chunk of its July losses, but the path ahead is anything but smooth. DroneShield shares changed hands at €1.35 on Friday, up 3.01 percent from Thursday's close of €1.31, extending a weekly gain of 27.58 percent. Yet the stock remains 24.92 percent in the red for the year and 6.69 percent lower on a monthly basis — a reminder that the bounce, while vigorous, has yet to repair the damage inflicted by a brutal late-July sell-off.
A Guidance Cut That Shook the Street
The turbulence traces back to management's decision to trim its full-year outlook. DroneShield now guides to 2026 revenue of between 250 and 270 million Australian dollars, a figure that landed well below the consensus estimate of roughly 323 million. That gap between corporate expectation and market hope was the catalyst for the sharp de-rating.
The underlying numbers, however, tell a more nuanced story. First-half revenue is projected to hit 125.8 million AUD, a 74 percent jump year-on-year. Recurring income from software, subscriptions and long-term service contracts reached 14.2 million AUD, representing 11.3 percent of half-year sales. Contracted revenue for 2026 already stood at 206 million AUD as of July 28.
Margin Pressure and a New Product Cycle
The profitability picture is where caution creeps in. Gross margin is expected to slip to 60 percent in the first half from 65 percent a year earlier. Management attributes the compression to a shifting sales mix, currency headwinds and a write-down on raw materials tied to the relocation of production facilities and an ERP system rollout. The company is targeting a return to 65 percent margins in the second half, banking on new hardware launches and the expanding subscription base.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?
Adding to the product momentum, DroneShield unveiled RfAI-3, the third generation of its proprietary radio-frequency detection technology. A software update scheduled for the third quarter is expected to deliver measurable gains in detection performance and response times, according to the company.
Institutional Vote of Confidence
The recovery rally has coincided with notable moves among large shareholders. JPMorgan Chase lifted its voting rights in the company to 6.68 percent from 5.15 percent, a disclosure dated July 30. The bank's decision to add to its position came just days after the guidance revision — a signal that at least one major institution sees value in the longer-term story.
There is also fresh firepower on the operational side. A reseller placed orders worth 23.2 million AUD for equipment destined for a European military customer, contributing to a backlog that had grown to 206 million AUD by July 28. In a separate development, Rear Admiral Lee Goddard joined the board in early July as an independent non-executive director, bringing more than three decades of defence, national security and industry experience.

Analysts Split Down the Middle
The sell-side community is currently divided on DroneShield's prospects. Bell Potter maintained its buy recommendation this week but trimmed its price target to 2.50 AUD. Jefferies, by contrast, downgraded the stock to "Underperform" and cut its target to 2.05 AUD. The average price target across four analysts stands at 2.37 AUD, implying potential upside of roughly 40 percent — though the dispersion of views underscores how differently the market is weighing strong revenue growth against a missed forecast.
The August 26 Reckoning
All eyes now turn to August 26, when DroneShield is due to publish its full half-year results. Investors will scrutinise whether the top-line surge translates into operating profit and whether the margin softness proves as temporary as management suggests. Until then, the tug-of-war between the bull and bear camps is likely to dictate the share price trajectory — and determine whether this rebound has legs or merely represents a pause in a longer decline.
