DroneShield Shares Ride Tech Wave as Order Book Backlog Raises Questions
Published on 10/18/2026 at 07:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deDroneShield's stock got a lift from a broader tech rally on Friday, but the gains did little to dispel doubts about the defence contractor's longer-term revenue pipeline.
The Sydney-listed counter jumped 9.9% in Australian trading as the ASX 200 added 1.00% and technology names across the board climbed an average of 5.62%. No company-specific announcement accompanied the move. In European trading, the shares closed at EUR 0.9388, up 6.7%.
The advance came despite a challenging year for the stock, which has shed 48% since January.
Contracted Revenue Sits Mid-Guidance
At the heart of the recent investor focus is DroneShield's contracted revenue position. As of October 12, the company had secured AUD 261 million in committed revenue for fiscal 2026 — a 35% increase on the prior year and squarely within management's guidance range of AUD 250 million to AUD 270 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?
The picture darkens further out. For fiscal 2027, only AUD 29 million in contracted revenue is on the books, while 2028 and beyond account for a combined AUD 17 million. That thin long-dated backlog is widely seen as the main reason market sentiment remains cautious, even as global demand for counter-drone systems grows amid shifting security environments.
Analysts have not raised their full-year targets, and market participants are pressing for concrete evidence of sustained profitability and steady capacity utilisation before turning more constructive.
Software Update Reaches 4,200 Devices
Alongside its revenue disclosure, DroneShield rolled out its fourth-quarter 2026 software update, delivered through its Mission Ready Services platform to more than 4,200 software-enabled devices. The refresh brings improvements in drone detection, identification, tracking and countermeasures.
On the shareholder register, Citi has emerged with a voting stake of 5.0754% in DroneShield, equivalent to 46,964,998 ordinary shares.
Whether Friday's rally marks the start of a lasting recovery or merely a sector-driven bounce will depend on the company's ability to announce significant new large orders in the coming quarters and replenish its revenue pipeline for later years.
