Energy Fuels: Uranium Sales Outpace the Bottom Line as Board Adds a Numbers Man

Energy Fuels closed the Australian Strategic Materials takeover during the quarter and has now set its sights on wrapping up the VAC acquisition in the first quarter of 2027, the company said on Wednesday. The same announcement confirmed that Jeffrey Olsen has joined the board of directors, where he will sit on the audit committee in the role of financial expert.

That appointment carries more weight than a routine governance footnote. With losses running high and project financing still contingent on conditions being met, scrutiny of financial risk moves to the front of the investor agenda. How well that oversight holds up in practice is the question that matters.

Reading the quarter beneath the headline

The third-quarter 2026 figures show why the audit committee's work deserves attention. Revenue came in at $29.2 million, while the net loss reached $52.4 million, or $0.20 per share. The gap between those two numbers is largely accounting rather than cash: non-cash, unrealized mark-to-market losses on the company's securities portfolio accounted for $35.3 million of the shortfall.

Judging the loss on the total alone would miss that distinction. The composition of the result — and how clearly the company explains the economic meaning of those valuation swings — is what a functioning financial watchdog should be measured against.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Energy Fuels?

The uranium segment tells a different story. It stayed profitable for a third consecutive quarter, with Energy Fuels selling 320,000 pounds of uranium at a weighted average realized price of $88.90 per pound.

Conditional support for Donald

Roughly two weeks before the board news, Export Finance Australia and the Australian National Reconstruction Fund Corporation approved conditional funding commitments of up to A$180 million combined. The money is meant to feed into a proposed A$200 million senior project financing for the first phase of the Donald project.

The approach looks sound on paper, provided the outstanding conditions are satisfied. Final contract documentation, due diligence and the remaining debt financing from commercial lenders all still have to fall into place. Energy Fuels is targeting a final investment decision by the end of 2026.

Separately, the company has approved construction of commercial heavy rare earth circuit facilities at the White Mesa Mill — a step that broadens the asset base beyond uranium.

Market reaction

Shares added 2.1% on Friday. The company did not name a specific trigger for the move, and a single session's gain carries little weight against the execution of the financial and organizational milestones now in play.

Olsen's explicitly defined audit committee remit points to a sensible set of priorities. Lasting confidence will depend on whether transparent risk control and solid financing come together — and that is the yardstick against which the next round of progress should be judged.
