Equinor's Buyback Year Rolls On as Fearnley Lifts Target to 540 NOK
Published on 10/30/2026 at 00:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deEquinor closed out its 2026 share repurchase programme this week with the launch of a final tranche worth up to USD 1.125 billion, part of a full-year envelope of as much as USD 3 billion. The move came alongside third-quarter figures that showed the Norwegian energy major's adjusted operating profit running at its highest level since late 2022 — though not every line of the earnings report cleared consensus.
Adjusted operating profit for the third quarter of 2026 reached USD 12.35 billion, edging past the USD 12.19 billion analyst consensus. Higher oil and gas prices, robust refining margins and increased production volumes all fed into the result, which climbed 99% year on year. Adjusted net profit came in at USD 2.86 billion, a 207% jump, while the reported net figure of USD 2.54 billion compared with a loss in the same period a year earlier.
The picture was less flattering at the per-share level. Adjusted earnings per share of USD 1.20 fell short of expectations, with one source citing a USD 1.37 consensus and another USD 1.36. Management also flagged lower international sales volumes, where lifted quantities trailed the company's own production entitlement. On the production side, the full-year oil and gas output growth forecast was raised from 3% to around 4%.
Cash Generation and a Leaner Balance Sheet
Operating cash flow after tax and before working capital changes amounted to USD 8.14 billion, up 53% from a year earlier, while organic capital expenditure totalled USD 3.28 billion. The strength of that inflow underpins both the investment programme and the shareholder payout. Net debt to capital employed fell to 3.8% at the end of September 2026, down from 10.4% at the end of June.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?
Equinor confirmed a quarterly cash dividend of USD 0.39 per share. Ex-dates are set for 15 February 2027 in Oslo and 16 February 2027 on the NYSE, with payment scheduled for 26 February 2027.
Fearnley Bets on Triple-Digit Brent
Analyst reaction to the quarter diverged sharply. Fearnley Securities raised its price target to 540 NOK from 440 NOK and reiterated its buy recommendation, driven chiefly by sharply upgraded oil and gas price assumptions rather than by the quarterly beat alone. The broker now models Brent at USD 100 per barrel for 2027 and USD 90 the following year, both above its previous forecasts, and has also lifted its European gas price expectations.
On that basis Fearnley projects a free cash flow yield of 24.1% for 2027 and 12.0% for the year after. It anticipates annual buybacks of USD 4 billion in each of 2027 and 2028, supplemented by special dividends of USD 0.60 per share per quarter — scenarios that hinge on crude prices staying above the framework underpinning the repurchase programme and remain analyst estimates rather than company commitments.
Berenberg took a more measured view, lifting its target to 400 NOK from 365 NOK while keeping a hold rating. The gap between the two houses illustrates the central question facing investors: whether Equinor can sustain its earnings power if energy prices cool from current levels.
Afrodite Doubles Up as Aker BP Pact Takes Shape
Operational news has added fresh scope to the portfolio. Following an appraisal well at the Afrodite gas and condensate discovery near Kvitebjørn, Equinor now estimates recoverable resources at 77–180 million barrels of oil equivalent — more than double its previous assessment. The company considers the find commercially viable and will study a subsea tie-back to Kvitebjørn.
Equinor also struck a strategic collaboration with Aker BP covering tight reservoirs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, encompassing joint technology development and standardisation, resource project advancement and knowledge sharing.
