Shares of European Lithium came under pressure on Thursday, easing 2.9% to EUR 0.2380 as a broad retreat in commodity markets and a selloff across Australian equities combined to weigh on the battery-metals developer.

The sector-wide gloom traces back to China, where lithium carbonate contracts on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange tumbled roughly 25% in September. Mounting doubts over demand growth in the electric-vehicle battery and energy storage segments drove the slide, with Chinese futures falling for a third straight session on Wednesday.

The downdraft rippled through the entire industry. Major international producers including SQM and Albemarle booked noticeable declines, while the depressed price environment clouds the outlook for exploration and development firms such as European Lithium, whose future mining projects depend heavily on global pricing trends.

Australian Selloff Adds to the Pressure

Sector-specific headwinds were compounded Thursday by pronounced weakness across the broader market. Every sector of the benchmark ASX 200 in Sydney faced selling pressure, according to Australian broadcaster ABC. Rising US Treasury yields prompted investors to shift allocations worldwide, hitting rate-sensitive resource stocks particularly hard.

Against that unsettled backdrop, European Lithium filed an application for the admission of securities to listing and submitted both its business report and its corporate governance statement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying European Lithium?

Merger Mechanics Take Center Stage

While the market churns, the company's planned takeover by Critical Metals Corp. continues to advance on a strictly regulated timetable. Voting materials for the acquisition of all shares and listed options were dispatched to security holders about a week ago, following orders issued roughly two weeks earlier by the Supreme Court of Western Australia convening the relevant shareholder and optionholder meetings.

The decisive variable for investors — how many Critical Metals shares they will ultimately receive — will not be settled until just before the vote. On October 21, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. AWST, the ASX is scheduled to announce the exact exchange ratio, calculated from the 20-day volume-weighted average price of Critical Metals on the Nasdaq. That mechanism ties the fate of European Lithium holders directly to trading in the US technology market.

The vote itself is set for October 22, 2026, when shareholders and optionholders gather in West Leederville, Western Australia. Approval by the required majority is the linchpin of the entire agreement: a rejection ends the process on the spot, while a green light sets the next legal gear in motion.

Court Approval and Completion

Even a favorable shareholder vote does not formally seal the transaction. A second hearing before the Supreme Court of Western Australia is scheduled for October 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. AWST, at which the court will decide on final approval of the scheme.

Should the judge give the go-ahead, the deal moves toward its provisional endpoint. November 5, 2026, is earmarked as the indicative implementation date, when Critical Metals is to issue CRML shares to European Lithium's security holders.

Despite the recent market correction, the stock has posted a gain of 163% since the start of the year.
