Eutelsat Balances Algerian Broadcast Renewal Against SpaceX's Frequency Buying Spree

Eutelsat has locked in another stretch of revenue from its legacy broadcast business, even as the wider satellite sector braces for a shake-up triggered by a multibillion-dollar spectrum deal in the United States.
The French operator confirmed on Wednesday that it has extended its long-running partnership with Télédiffusion d'Algérie. Under the renewed arrangement, the Algerian state broadcaster will keep using capacity aboard the EUTELSAT 7 West A satellite to beam its television channels across the Middle East and North Africa. Neither side disclosed the financial terms, but the deal keeps Eutelsat's existing orbital infrastructure in the region fully employed and lends stability to its established broadcasting arm.
A $8 Billion Spectrum Grab Rattles Europe
That steady backdrop contrasts sharply with the turbulence coming from across the Atlantic. On Friday, SpaceX agreed to acquire a nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio from private equity firm Grain Management â a transaction Reuters values at roughly $8 billion and one that still hinges on regulatory approval.
The news stoked fears that satellite-based mobile services could soon encroach on territory long held by terrestrial carriers, and European telecom stocks duly came under selling pressure. Eutelsat finished Friday's session at EUR 1.39, a daily decline of 1.1%, leaving the shares hovering just above their 52-week low of EUR 1.36 and a world away from the 52-week high of EUR 4.62.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?
The gap between those two poles lays bare how cautious investors have become while the company simultaneously funds a costly fleet overhaul. Building out low-Earth-orbit constellations demands enormous capital, and Eutelsat is competing against deep-pocketed rivals that are rapidly expanding their reach through strategic spectrum purchases.
OneWeb Fleet Takes Shape as Airbus Hits a Milestone
Those rivals notwithstanding, Eutelsat's own LEO program is advancing. Roughly a week ago, Airbus Defence and Space completed the first 32 new satellites destined for the OneWeb network, part of a renewal effort spanning 669 spacecraft in total. The units are being readied for an upcoming launch with SpaceX.
Since that announcement, the stock has shed 10.5% â a retreat that underlines how little credit the market is currently extending to operational progress.
Distribution is broadening too. On Thursday, Paratus Namibia went live with OneWeb's LEO satellite service for residential and business customers in Namibia, extending Eutelsat's existing connectivity footprint in the market and opening the door to new customer segments for low-orbit links.
India Still Waiting on the Starting Gun
Not every market is moving at the same pace. Eutelsat OneWeb's commercial debut in India remains on hold, tied up in security clearances and further official sign-offs from the government, according to media reports. The rollout can only proceed once every regulatory review has been cleared.

Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said his company is likewise waiting on the necessary approvals. On the Eutelsat OneWeb side, executive Rahul Vatts insisted the infrastructure is fully ready and all security demonstrations have already been completed. Until the green light arrives, however, operators in the Indian market will have to keep waiting.
Two Dates to Watch
Attention now shifts to concrete milestones that should shed light on how the business is actually performing. On 15 October 2026, Eutelsat will take part in the annual conference of the Ultra HD Forum Italia, where technical standards and the distribution of broadcast and data capacity are likely to dominate the agenda.
The more consequential date comes at month's end. Eutelsat is scheduled to publish first-quarter revenue for fiscal year 2026â27 on 29 October 2026. That interim report will have to show how much OneWeb activity is already feeding into the top line â and whether the core business can hold its ground against intensifying competition.
