Eutelsat Rises 8.8% as Ukraine Satellite Limits Refocus Investors on European Capacity
Published on 10/18/2026 at 18:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deEutelsat shares closed Friday at EUR 1.78, up 8.8%, capping a seven-day advance of 28% that has pulled the Paris-listed satellite operator — and sector peer SES — back into the market's line of sight. The trigger was a familiar one for anyone watching the war in Ukraine: reports of speed restrictions on SpaceX's Starshield military service, which set investors speculating about demand for non-US orbital capacity.
Those connections were restored to full capacity on 15 October, according to a Ukrainian government official cited by Axios. Even so, the appetite for fallback options did not fade, and capital rotated toward European operators.
Analysts Split on What Is Really Driving the Move
The read from the sell side is more measured than the share price suggests. Stéphane Beyazian of Oddo BHF said on 16 October that the debate over Starlink availability in Ukraine had certainly helped the stock, but he pointed to a broader re-rating of European satellite operators as the main force behind the gain.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?
Bernstein's Aleksander Peterc, who weighed in two days earlier on 14 October, framed the shift as one of perception: uncertainty over access to US-owned services has put European providers back on investors' radar. His caveat was blunt — Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation is no plug-and-play substitute for Starlink's infrastructure. Reuters, citing industry sources, reported that European allies still lack a ready-made alternative, with ground-segment and terminal constraints limiting OneWeb's ability to step in. Eutelsat continues to provide communications services in Ukraine through its LEO and GEO networks in partnership with local operators.
India Filing Gives OneWeb a Five-Year Head Start
Beyond the geopolitical noise, Eutelsat is pressing ahead with its commercial build-out. Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises, said on 14 October that Eutelsat OneWeb is well ahead of Starlink in India's satellite communications licensing process — its application was filed five years earlier. Final regulatory approvals for market entry are still pending.
In its core broadcast and data business, the company said on 14 October that it had renewed a long-term partnership with Antik Sat, operated by Antik Telecom, and with A1 at the 16° East orbital slot. The multi-transponder agreement secures satellite capacity for television services in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Revenue Test Set for 29 October 2026
Investors will get their first hard look at operating momentum when Eutelsat reports first-quarter revenue for fiscal 2026/27 on 29 October 2026, according to the company's financial calendar. That print will show whether the demand for alternative satellite capacity now being priced into the shares is showing up in actual earnings.
