Eutelsat's OneWeb Rollout Hits Regulatory Crosswinds as SpaceX Looms Over the Sector

Eutelsat is pressing ahead with the buildout of its satellite capacity, yet the operational rollout is running into tangible delays — a combination that has left its share price badly bruised. The stock closed Friday at EUR 1.39, down 26% over a 30-day stretch, after touching a fresh 52-week low of EUR 1.36 during the session. With a market capitalization of EUR 1.66 billion, the European operator faces mounting pressure to keep pace with the deep-pocketed US players reshaping the industry.
Investors are fixated less on the commercial wins Eutelsat keeps notching and more on the clock: how quickly the OneWeb constellation can be brought fully to market.
A Billion-Dollar Shot Across the Bow
Sentiment took an additional hit from a blockbuster deal in the sector. SpaceX agreed to acquire a nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management for roughly $8 billion — a move that has stoked fears of rapidly intensifying competition from satellite-based mobile connectivity. According to Reuters, the news weighed on telecom and satellite stocks on both sides of the Atlantic. For Eutelsat, the US rival's aggressive expansion underscores the urgency of modernizing its own network.
Fleet Progress, Market Hurdles
The planned expansion of Eutelsat's orbital infrastructure demands heavy logistical and regulatory legwork. Just over a week ago, Airbus Defence and Space completed the first 32 next-generation OneWeb satellites. The units belong to a fleet totaling 669 spacecraft and are being prepped for transport ahead of a launch with SpaceX.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?
On the commercial front, Eutelsat is leaning on both its legacy geostationary infrastructure and its newer low-Earth-orbit offerings. On Thursday, the company reported an extension of its long-standing partnership with Télédiffusion d'Algérie. Under the deal, Algerian television channels will continue to be broadcast across the Middle East and North Africa via the EUTELSAT 7 West A satellite. Financial terms were not disclosed by the parties.
In a parallel development, telecom provider Paratus Namibia announced Thursday the launch of its service based on Eutelsat OneWeb. Under a multi-year agreement with Eutelsat, the provider is now delivering LEO services to private and business customers in Namibia — another building block for the joint venture's push to monetize global broadband satellite coverage.
India Waits on the Starting Blocks
Market entry in certain key markets, however, is dragging. In India, the chief regulatory officer of Eutelsat partner Bharti Airtel said Thursday that security demonstrations have been completed and that further approvals from the Indian government are now pending. India's communications minister emphasized that licensed operators must satisfy all security requirements before official service can begin.
Against that backdrop, the coming weeks should reveal how swiftly Eutelsat can clear the remaining regulatory conditions.
Competition and the Classic TV Business
To stay competitive in the low-orbit broadband market, Eutelsat is driving the expansion of the OneWeb network. At the same time, the company continues to secure revenue in the traditional broadcast segment. On Wednesday, it extended its strategic partnership with Télédiffusion d'Algérie, locking in satellite capacity on EUTELSAT 7 West A for Algerian TV broadcasts across North Africa and the Middle East. As with the earlier announcement, no financial details were provided.
Analysts remain cautious on the near-term outlook. Clarity on current business performance will come directly from the company before long: management is due to publish first-quarter revenue figures for fiscal year 2026/27 on October 29. That interim report should show how well the legacy satellite business and OneWeb services are holding up in a shifting competitive landscape.
