Reports that SpaceX has curtailed certain Starlink services used by Ukraine's military sent Eutelsat shares sharply higher on Wednesday, as traders bet that doubts over the reliability of US-provided satellite capacity will push European governments and institutional customers toward homegrown alternatives.

The Paris-listed operator's stock jumped 22% to EUR 1.69, building on a close of EUR 1.38 on Tuesday. The rally gathered pace as the session wore on, with market participants citing Ukrainian accounts that Starlink's military-grade service cut out at speeds above 160 kilometers per hour, disrupting drone operations on the battlefield.

A Reassessment of Reliance on US Systems

Investors are increasingly working on the assumption that European satellite operators stand to gain from a shift in how risk is priced. If access to American space-based systems comes to be viewed as less dependable, the argument for regional self-sufficiency gains traction — a theme that Reuters reported is drawing fresh attention from fund managers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Eutelsat?

Bernstein analyst Aleksander Peterc pointed out that European providers are moving back into the spotlight. Eutelsat, through its OneWeb constellation, runs its own low-Earth-orbit network and ranks among the few existing alternatives in the near-Earth communications segment.

India License Race and Fleet Progress

Beyond the geopolitical tailwind, the company is making headway on the international front. Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has said he expects Eutelsat OneWeb to secure regulatory approval in India ahead of rival Starlink, noting that its satellite communications license application was filed five years ago.

India's telecom minister has indicated that OneWeb, Starlink and a Reliance Jio joint venture all hold licenses, though commercial launch still hinges on pending decisions over spectrum fees and individual security clearances.

On the hardware side, Airbus Defence and Space finished the first 32 new OneWeb satellites for Eutelsat roughly two weeks ago. The units have been prepped for transport and are set to fly on a SpaceX rocket. Investors will get a fresh look at the company's finances on October 29, when Eutelsat reports first-quarter revenue for fiscal year 2026/27.
