Evotec's Beat Wins RBC's Backing, but Mubadala's Exit Leaves a Second Signal
Published on 10/21/2026 at 20:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deEvotec shares drew fresh attention after the company's preliminary nine-month figures came in ahead of market expectations — but the stock's 3.1% gain on the day is no proof of a lasting turnaround. The distinction that matters: beating expectations is not the same as delivering a convincing level of earnings. Recent news offers some relief for the German drug developer. It does not yet supply a strong enough case for a fundamental re-rating.
Where the bar sits
According to company statements, both headline metrics topped market forecasts. That is a positive signal, though not yet evidence of economic strength. The adjusted operating loss remains the central constraint. The expectations were exceeded; the loss question was not resolved by it. Anyone looking only at the surprise may miss the level of the result. Anyone looking only at the loss underestimates the significance of the better numbers. A sound assessment has to bring the two together.
Media reports suggest the preliminary figures were not followed by a more optimistic valuation of the company. That fits a sober reading: the positive surprise deserves recognition but does not automatically justify a shift into the bull camp.
The confirmed guidance is not a new growth promise
Roughly a week earlier, Evotec confirmed its full-year 2026 forecast, keeping its orientation framework unchanged. No upgrade can be derived from it. For investors, that difference matters more than how friendly the next trading session turns out.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?
The preliminary figures themselves: group revenue of around EUR 465.0 million for the first nine months, with adjusted group EBITDA at roughly minus EUR 42.8 million. Both figures are unaudited. For the full year 2026, Evotec confirmed group revenue of around EUR 570 million to EUR 610 million, so the preliminary data did not trigger a raise of the sales target. On adjusted group EBITDA, the confirmed annual guidance is around minus EUR 70 million to minus EUR 105 million — the outlook still envisages a negative result.
Evotec also publishes currency-adjusted ranges, which must be kept separate from the other forecast figures and do not represent an additional upgrade. At constant currencies, the company expects annual revenue of around EUR 595 million to EUR 635 million, with the corresponding adjusted EBITDA band at around minus EUR 60 million to minus EUR 90 million.
I would read the confirmed forecast neither as a disappointment nor as a breakthrough. It underpins existing planning. Deriving an accelerated upturn from it goes beyond what the company has said; dismissing the beat as meaningless would be just as one-sided.
A shareholder signal that cuts the other way
The ownership side supplies a counterpoint to the positive earnings surprise. Per a voting rights notification dated October 15, the stake indirectly held by Mubadala fell to 0 voting rights on October 14. The notification was made for Mubadala and formally also for the government of Abu Dhabi.
No reliable statement about motives can be drawn from this, and the filing does not explain the day's price move. It remains relevant for valuation all the same: a positive operating interim result and the departure of a shareholder are different signals and should not be fused into a seemingly unambiguous story.
Evotec at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
RBC stays bullish, without a fresh upgrade
RBC Capital Markets confirmed its "Outperform" rating and EUR 10 price target on October 14. Analyst Charles Weston pointed to revenue and operating profit above market expectations as well as the confirmed annual guidance. That was not a new upgrade but the reaffirmation of an existing positive view — the analyst response honored the better figures without Evotec itself having raised its annual targets.
November 5 carries the interpretation
On November 5, Evotec intends to publish the full results for the third quarter and the first nine months of 2026. That date offers the next opportunity to place the preliminary data within the complete report. Less important than another positive headline is how convincing the result looks in full. The surprise so far is a starting point for valuation, not a substitute for it.
On balance, Evotec merits a differentiated stance: the better numbers argue against blanket pessimism, while the still-negative adjusted operating result argues against premature euphoria. The relief is justified; a durable turnaround has yet to prove itself.
