Michigan safety regulators and union leaders have launched investigations after a long-serving worker died in a fall at a Stellantis parts distribution facility. The death has renewed scrutiny of workplace safety practices at one of the world's largest automakers.
Worker Dies in 25-Foot Fall
James Brasher, a 57-year-old member of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 1248, died on August 1, 2026, after falling roughly 25 feet from a second-story loading bay into a trash bin at the Mopar National Parts Distribution Center in Center Line. The employee was discarding equipment when the incident occurred.
The facility was undergoing renovation work at the time. Although initial reports suggested Brasher was wearing a safety harness, officials confirmed the equipment was not attached. The fall caused a fatal head injury.
Regulators and Union Demand Answers
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The incident marks the 24th workplace fatality recorded in the state during 2026.

UAW President Shawn Fain and Vice President Rich Boyer issued statements calling for a comprehensive inquiry. Brasher had been a union member for more than three decades and was described as a veteran of the industry. His death is the third linked to Stellantis operations in the Detroit area since August 2024.
Site in Transition
The Center Line facility is undergoing significant logistical changes. Stellantis sold the distribution centre in January 2025 and has continued operating it under a lease-back agreement. The company plans to relocate operations to a new hub in Van Buren Township, expected to open in 2027.
Despite the tragedy, Stellantis has pointed to improvements in broader operational performance. The automaker recently reported an 89% plant efficiency rate and is targeting €6 billion in annual cost savings by 2028. In the second quarter of 2026, the company posted a 13% increase in revenue and adjusted operating income of approximately $890 million.

The fatality coincides with a major safety recall for the automaker. Stellantis is recalling 1.5 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks built between 2019 and 2026 over concerns that second-row seat belt buckle anchors may not be properly secured.

The recall covers approximately 1.27 million vehicles in the United States, with additional units affected in Canada, Mexico and other international markets. One injury has been reported in connection with the seat belt issue, though no fatalities have been linked to the defect.
