Authorities are investigating the death of a contractor at the Cleveland-Cliffs steel plant in Burns Harbor, Indiana, after a workplace accident late last week. The incident, which occurred at the facility in Porter, claimed the life of 28-year-old Jonathan Stepp, a father of six.
What Happened
Mr. Stepp was operating a pot hauler—a specialised vehicle used in steel mill operations to transport molten material—when the accident took place. Reports differ slightly on the exact timing, with some sources dating the incident to August 13 and others to August 14.
The victim was not directly employed by Cleveland-Cliffs but worked for Phoenix Services, a contractor owned by SunCoke Energy. The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 150 confirmed his death. A GoFundMe campaign has since been established to support his family, including his fiancée and six children.
