Food safety regulators across multiple jurisdictions have ramped up enforcement against commercial kitchens, warehouses, and hospitality venues following a wave of hygiene violations. Recent operations have seen authorities penalise a Jaipur hotel for storing expired products, while a Pune sweet shop secured a significant legal victory after a court ruled its suspension was unjustified.

Court Orders Compensation for Unfair Suspension

On August 17, 2026, the Bombay High Court ordered the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to pay Rs 5 lakh in compensation to Gurunanak Dairy and Sweets, a Pune-based establishment. The ruling followed a 34-day closure that cost the business owner approximately Rs 8.74 lakh in lost revenue.

The shop's licence was originally suspended on June 12 after complaints of food poisoning. However, a re-inspection on July 13 showed 98 percent compliance with safety standards, with the establishment scoring 35 out of 36 possible marks.

Despite this strong rating, the FDA failed to restore the licence promptly. The court bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge and Justice Gautam A. Ankhad, described the continued suspension as a perversity and revoked the order.

Raids and Seizures in Rajasthan and Karnataka

In a separate operation on the same day, the Rajasthan Food Safety Department raided a private hotel in Jaipur's Bani Park area as part of the Shuddh Aahar-Milawat Par Vaar campaign.

Inspectors destroyed expired food items, including peanut butter, bread, and sweet corn. They also collected samples of paneer and baati for laboratory analysis and issued an improvement notice over the hotel's failure to list MSG warnings on its Chinese menu.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka FDA inspected 26 star hotels in Bengaluru earlier in August. Officials seized 105kg of expired food at the Radisson Blu Atria, including 50kg of chicken and 25kg of meat.

Similar seizures occurred at other high-end venues. The Lalit Ashok saw 76kg of meat and 200kg of vegetables confiscated, while the Taj Yeshwantpur had 72kg of meat and fish removed. Further inspections led to the sealing of an Indira Canteen kitchen in Gottigere due to rodent infestations.

Dark Stores Under Scrutiny

The crackdown has extended to the rapid-delivery sector, particularly dark stores operated by Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart. In Maharashtra, the FDA suspended licences at 12 such facilities following raids on 86 sites led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. Inspections uncovered cockroaches, rodent droppings, and failures in temperature control.

In response, the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on August 17, 2026, to establish specific norms for dark stores. The federation proposed a standardised ratio for stock-keeping unit (SKU) density to ensure adequate space for safe storage and called for nationwide surprise inspections.

International Enforcement Actions

Food safety enforcement has also been active in North America and Pakistan. Between August 11 and August 14, 2026, Florida health inspectors ordered the temporary closure of several Miami-area restaurants due to live rodents, mold, and cockroach infestations.

Notable violations were recorded at Villa Pizza at Miami International Airport and Osteria del Mar in Miami Beach. In Georgia, an Italian restaurant in Lawrenceville received an unsatisfactory score of 54 on August 10, 2026, after inspectors found dead ants in liquor bottles and mold on produce.

In Lahore, the Punjab Food Authority sealed two units in Kot Abdul Malik. Led by Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmed, the operation destroyed 7,900 kg of adulterated spices and expired salt, with fines totalling Rs 2 million.

In Ahmedabad, the Municipal Corporation sealed four outlets for using banned synthetic paneer and oil with total polar compound (TPC) levels exceeding the 25 percent legal limit. The outlets must remain closed for seven days pending further legal action.
