Heidelberg Materials finds itself pulled in two directions as the third quarter draws to a close: a North American business expanding at roughly double the pace of its European home turf, and a share price that has surrendered more than a third of its value since January. Analysts are recalibrating their expectations accordingly, even as the building-materials group pushes ahead with a Nordic acquisition and wraps up a major capital-return program.

North America Outpaces Europe

Deutsche Bank Research's Jon Bell expects organic growth of about 5% in North America for the third quarter — a showing that stands well clear of the roughly 2% he projects for Europe. On the old continent, rising selling prices are doing the heavy lifting while volumes drift slightly lower. The gap between the two regions captures the broader state of the industry: North American demand is holding up comparatively well, whereas caution in residential construction and a difficult operating environment are weighing on momentum in Europe.

Bell reaffirmed his "Buy" rating on Wednesday, though he trimmed his price target to EUR 210 from EUR 220.

Cost Pressure and Weather Take a Toll

The challenging backdrop extends beyond regional demand patterns. RBC Capital Markets' Anthony Codling pointed to pronounced cost inflation, with prices struggling to keep pace, as well as weather-related disruptions during the third quarter. His firm upgraded the stock to "Outperform" — a re-rating that followed the shares' earlier declines — while cutting its target to EUR 211 from EUR 217. In a sector study, Codling singled out Heidelberg Materials as his preferred pick among European building-materials producers, citing valuation prospects and the strategic direction set by management.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Heidelberg Materials?

Geopolitical uncertainty and weather-related outages have added to the industry's burden, alongside lingering cost inflation and local pricing pressure. Even so, market watchers see strengths in the group, pointing to its entrenched position in its core regions.

Nordic Expansion Takes Shape

Portfolio development remains a priority. Heidelberg Materials Nordics agreed to acquire NCC AB's Swedish and Norwegian aggregates and asphalt operations — a package spanning 106 aggregates sites and 44 hot-mix asphalt plants. The adjusted enterprise value comes to approximately SEK 5.5 billion. The transaction is subject to approval from the relevant authorities.

The deal follows the completion of the company's multibillion-euro share buyback program roughly two weeks ago. With that capital measure now fully closed out, attention is shifting back toward operational performance and further portfolio adjustments.

Shares Reflect Sector Pressure

The stock's muted performance underscores how heavily broader reticence in the construction industry is weighing on valuations. On Friday, the shares closed at EUR 142.60, up 1.4% on the day, yet down 36% since the start of the year.

Clearer insight into the company's financial health arrives on November 4, 2026, when Heidelberg Materials publishes its official trading update for the third quarter and discusses the year's operational trajectory on an analyst call.
