Hochtief's Profit Surge Faces Its Real Test in a Denied Takeover Rumor
Published on 11/08/2026 at 04:34 | Editorial boerse-global.deHochtief shares jumped 5.5% yesterday on a Bloomberg report that controlling shareholder ACS was weighing strategic options. Today the Spanish group told the CNMV, Spain's financial markets regulator, that it is considering neither a takeover offer for Hochtief nor a sale of its US subsidiary Turner. The report, which cited people familiar with the matter, had floated a full buyout of Hochtief's minority stakes, a merger, or a New York listing of Turner — all described as unconfirmed and at an early stage.
With that speculation stripped away, the valuation question returns to the business itself: how much confidence do the numbers justify at a time when higher interest rates and jitters about the AI boom are weighing on expectations?
Nine-Month Earnings Do the Heavy Lifting
The operating figures reported on Thursday give the bull case real substance. Operating group profit for the first nine months of 2026 reached EUR 752 million, a gain of 40%. New orders came in at EUR 48.6 billion, up 33%, and the order backlog hit a record EUR 89.7 billion.
Hochtief also left its full-year guidance untouched: operating group profit of EUR 1,025 million to EUR 1,100 million for 2026. That range is now the yardstick against which any further optimism must be measured. Bulls can point to the profit growth already banked; the more cautious will stress that the company held its outlook steady despite such a strong run, which implies a cooler final quarter.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Hochtief?
Two Brokers, Two Shades of Caution
Jefferies kept its "Hold" rating and a EUR 493 price target on Friday. Analyst Graham Hunt had flagged a very strong third quarter the day before, but read the unchanged guidance as a signal of deceleration in the closing months of the year. He also pointed to the ACS report and to a capital markets day scheduled for 12 November — a concrete date on which the owner could shed more light.
Deutsche Bank Research trimmed its target to EUR 403 from EUR 411 on Friday, also maintaining "Hold," following the earnings call. The broker cited the AI selloff, higher rates and political headwinds as burdens on competitors of the US subsidiary Turner. Those factors would matter more for Hochtief if they started to bite into its operating performance.
Data Centres Move From Plan to Operation
Alongside the order book, Hochtief PPP Solutions and Palladio Partners have developed and financed a site that is the second location in a planned European edge data centre network. The step from project to operation is what counts here; further progress on the network could reinforce expectations for the business, provided it translates into hard results.
What Decides the Re-rating
So long as Hochtief backs up its confirmed profit range with actual trading, the operating case for a continued recovery holds. Should earnings momentum come in weaker than investors expect, the record backlog could quickly lose its persuasive power. The next real checkpoint is delivery on the annual target — operating profit and the execution of orders above all — with the 12 November capital markets day offering the next word from ACS.
