Holiday Promenade Turns Into Recruiting Drive as German Region Courts Tourists for Jobs

The pitch came not in a sterile job center, but on the sandy shores of Boltenhagen, along the promenades of Poel Island, and amid the historic streets of Schwerin. Over the course of several summer days, employment consultants approached vacationers with a simple proposition: why not stay for good?
The unconventional outreach, staged by the Welcome Service Centers of Nordwestmecklenburg, Ludwigslust-Parchim, and Schwerin, generated roughly 1,500 counseling conversations by early August. Organizers branded the effort as "holiday action days" — a bid to convert seasonal affection for the region into long-term labor commitments.
Kathrin Hoffmann, who heads the economic and tourism working group, said the relaxed setting proved decisive. "The positive response shows that this format is well-suited to reaching potential skilled workers in a laid-back atmosphere," she explained. The initiative received backing from the regional marketing body.
The numbers behind the campaign explain the urgency. Schwerin alone carries about 2,100 unfilled positions, while the Mecklenburg Lake District reports more than 2,500 vacancies. Across the entire state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, roughly 63,500 people were registered as unemployed in July — an increase of 1,600 compared to the previous month, a seasonal uptick that does little to ease the underlying tension.
Nowhere is the imbalance sharper than in vocational training. Approximately 3,000 apprenticeship slots sit vacant, competing for just 2,400 applicants. That gap threatens to compound the region's demographic challenges for years to come.
Recruiting new staff is only half the battle — keeping them safe once they arrive is just as critical. Employers who take on new workers face a legal duty to assess workplace risks, and the paperwork can quickly pile up. The tourist-targeting strategy also drew unexpected international interest. Among those who stopped to inquire were IT specialists and civil engineers from Iran, reflecting broader national and state-level efforts to smooth the path for immigrant workers. Late last month, Germany and Colombia signed a social security agreement designed to simplify recruitment, protect pension entitlements, and eliminate double insurance coverage. Similar cross-border initiatives are taking shape elsewhere — in Lower Austria, roughly 150 Vietnamese nursing trainees recently began their programs.
Other German states offer a glimpse of what sustained campaigns can achieve. In Saxony-Anhalt, a spring apprenticeship drive reached hundreds of participants, and the number of new training contracts signed with foreign nationals climbed by 11.5 percent.
For Westmecklenburg's recruiters, the holiday experiment is just the beginning. The logic is straightforward: meet potential employees where they already feel at home, and hope the vacation memories turn into a permanent address.
