India's Silver Import Window Opens as Coin Sales Halve and London Stocks Build
Published on 11/07/2026 at 17:03 | Editorial boerse-global.deIndia has thrown open a regulatory door for silver, but whether anyone walks through it is another matter. Import approvals covering roughly 6,500 tonnes over the coming six months could underpin demand in the world's most price-sensitive bullion market — provided buyers actually use them.
The permissions stem from a simplified procedure for silver import licences published by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on 13 October. Heraeus, which flagged the volumes on Monday, said the approvals could ease supply and support consumption over the next two quarters. That outlook rests squarely on genuine end-user appetite, so investors are watching uptake rather than the headline tonnage.
Physical Trade Sends a Cautious Signal
Evidence from the spot market argues for restraint. Reports on Wednesday described muted downstream demand and sluggish dealing, even as silver's sharp rebound from its sell-off was attributed to a softer US dollar and lower yields.
Chinese inventory data point in no single direction either. Social silver stocks reportedly fell 67 tonnes week on week to 3,800 tonnes, while SHFE holdings rose 8.4 tonnes from the prior week through Thursday. One storage pool is draining as another fills — which is why the trajectory of real consumption matters more than the licence headline for gauging India's impact.
US Mint Sales Cut in Half
Across the Atlantic, the coin market is telling a distinctly cooler story. The US Mint sold 275,000 Silver Eagles in September 2026, down 52% from the same month a year earlier, according to a media report published yesterday.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?
Well-stocked dealer shelves and cheaper buybacks explain much of the drop, the report said: distributors can meet requirements from coins already in circulation rather than ordering fresh strikes. On that reading, weak sales of new issues are compatible with silver demand that hasn't disappeared. Yet the broader picture fits the softer narrative — a report released Thursday described third-quarter bullion coin sales as markedly weaker than a year earlier. The inventory explanation lands in a market where other signals of hesitant coin demand are already flashing.
London Vaults and the Free-Float Question
How that metal is distributed matters for supply. A substantial share of stored silver is tied up in investment products, so the freely available quantity is a better guide to the immediate buffer than total vault holdings. Rising stocks can calm scarcity fears — but only if the metal can actually reach the market.
Industry Pulls Back, Mines Push the Other Way
Metals Focus expects industrial silver demand to fall 3% in 2026 to just under 640 million ounces, citing weaker solar demand, material thrifting and substitution. The LBMA has already pointed to the start of copper substitution at a leading Chinese solar module manufacturer. How aggressively industrial users cut their silver intensity will shape what happens next.
Supply is moving in the opposite direction. Mexican silver production fell 12.9% year on year in August 2026, according to media reports — output losses that could tighten availability if higher inventories fail to plug the gap.
The Deficit Forecast Faces Its Audit
The April deficit projection from Metals Focus and the Silver Institute remains unchanged, forecasting a 46.3 million-ounce silver market shortfall for 2026. An interim review is due in mid-November.
That review should prove especially relevant for weighing India's potential demand boost. Further clues on industrial appetite could come from China's inflation data on 9 November and its trade balance on 10 November. Friday's close of USD 51.88 per ounce sits between fading demand pressure and supply constraints that limit the downside. The decisive test remains whether easier imports translate into actual additional purchases.
