Infineon Pushes Deeper Into AI Power Infrastructure as Rate Fears Clip Chip Stocks
Published on 10/18/2026 at 05:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon Technologies is pressing ahead with the build-out of its artificial-intelligence power franchise, even as a sector-wide retreat in semiconductor shares put the German chipmaker among the DAX's weakest performers at the end of the week.
The stock fell 2.9% on Friday to EUR 51.54, caught in a global selloff across chip equities that set in after unexpectedly hot US inflation data. News agencies Reuters and dpa-AFX attributed the pullback across the sector to the inflation reading and the interest-rate worries it stirred, with concerns over the investment costs of the global AI build-out adding to the pressure. Despite the latest bout of consolidation, the share is still up 37% since the start of the year.
The softer tape reflects broader nervousness in international equity markets. Higher rate expectations are sapping investors' appetite for risk, while technology companies simultaneously have to shoulder heavy spending on new manufacturing capacity and chip architectures.
Silicon Carbide Supply Secured
On the operational front, the company is pushing ahead with its technological transformation. On Thursday, Infineon and Wolfspeed agreed a multi-year supply deal covering 200-millimeter silicon carbide wafers. The arrangement is intended to underpin Infineon's shift from 150mm to 200mm SiC production, and it broadens an existing supply relationship between the two firms — the agreement spans both wafer sizes. Silicon carbide plays a central role in power electronics, particularly in electric mobility and industrial drives, and the tie-up is meant to firm up supply-chain stability.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
Infineon is also stepping up its push into the fast-growing AI market. On Monday, it unveiled the XDP8HD40S-1, a high-voltage hot-swap controller designed for power-supply architectures in AI servers running at ±400 volts and 800 volts DC. First samples are slated for the second quarter of 2027.
Alongside the new part, the group completed its acquisition of C2i Semiconductors, an Indian company based in Bengaluru that specializes in software-defined multiphase controllers and power stages for data centers. The deal, closed on October 5, strengthens Infineon's hand in power management for AI computing facilities.
A Packed Calendar Before the Numbers
Attention now turns to a busy stretch of technology events. On Wednesday, Infineon announced its presence at the electronica trade fair in Munich, running from November 10 to 13, where management plans to showcase customer use cases and semiconductor innovations for Physical AI. The presentations will span applications including robotics, mobility, edge devices and power-supply infrastructure for artificial intelligence.
Infineon will also host its own technology and cooperation forum, OktoberTech Silicon Valley, on October 22, with a focus on strategic exchange with industry partners and new system approaches.
For investors, though, the key date comes sooner. On November 10, Infineon publishes results for the fourth quarter and for the full 2026 fiscal year — the same day the Munich fair opens. The report will show how far demand in the core automotive and industrial businesses has been able to cushion the industry downturn, and how the operating business has held up against a changed rate environment and restraint in technology spending.
