There aren't many stocks that capture the whiplash of the artificial intelligence boom quite like IREN. The company has spent the past year shedding its Bitcoin-mining identity and rebuilding itself as a high-performance data center operator for AI workloads — a transformation that has produced staggering contract wins, a flurry of analyst price targets, and a share price that remains stubbornly far from its highs.

The numbers tell the story of that disconnect. IREN's stock has climbed roughly 125 percent over the past twelve months, yet it still trades nearly half below its 52-week peak of €68.61, last seen on November 3. At its current level around €34.80, the equity sits 49.27 percent under that record — a gap that underscores just how much skepticism has crept into the market's view of the company's pivot.

Bank of America's Quiet Accumulation

Not everyone is waiting on the sidelines. A regulatory filing with the SEC in early August revealed that Bank of America has built a position of roughly 21 million IREN shares, representing a 5.8 percent stake based on shares outstanding as of April 30. That kind of holding doesn't materialize overnight — it reflects systematic buying by one of the world's largest asset managers during a period when the stock had already retreated meaningfully from its high.

The move suggests that at least one major institutional player views the current volatility — which runs at an annualized 140.9 percent — as the price of admission to a structural shift, rather than a reason to stay away.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

A Flurry of Deals and a $500 Billion Tailwind

The operational backdrop for that confidence has been building for months. In May, IREN struck a $1.6 billion alliance with Dell, followed by a $3.4 billion agreement with NVIDIA. July brought new multi-year AI cloud contracts worth $2.8 billion, prompting the company to raise its year-end target for annualized AI cloud revenue from $3.7 billion to more than $4 billion — with roughly 85 percent of that figure already backed by signed agreements.

Then came the completion of the Mirantis acquisition on August 4, a $625 million deal that folds cloud software and orchestration capabilities into IREN's existing hardware infrastructure. The purchase price was settled through the issuance of around 12.6 million common shares, along with a mix of cash, restricted stock units, and other components valued at approximately $40 million. Management framed the acquisition as a way to deepen its capabilities in AI workload orchestration, monitoring, and customer support — pieces that complement its own data centers, compute capacity, and software stack.

The broader industry is also getting a financial boost. This week, NVIDIA joined forces with BlackRock, Blackstone, and Goldman Sachs on an initiative designed to mobilize more than $500 billion in debt financing for AI infrastructure. For a capital-intensive operator like IREN, which pairs power-hungry data centers with high-end hardware, that liquidity backstop reduces the long-term financing risk attached to its ambitious buildout.

Analysts Split on How Far the Stock Can Run

Wall Street's views on IREN remain sharply divided, reflecting the uncertainty around how quickly the company can convert its contract pipeline into actual revenue. Goldman Sachs maintains a "Hold" rating with a $50 price target. Bernstein's Gautam Chhugani reaffirmed his Buy recommendation with a $100 target in late July, while H.C. Wainwright's Mike Colonnese followed days later with a Buy rating and a $90 target. Both of those calls came within the past three weeks, making them current assessments rather than stale holdovers from an earlier phase of the rally.

Against the current share price, those targets imply substantial upside — a gap that highlights how differently analysts and the market are weighing short-term noise against long-term potential.

Execution Is Now the Question

The company has also been shoring up its leadership team. In mid-July, IREN appointed Eric Hammersley as Chief Information Security Officer, a hire that fits a firm increasingly handling sensitive AI workloads for large enterprise clients, where security requirements go well beyond what a traditional data center operator typically confronts.

The technical picture, meanwhile, remains under pressure. The stock trades 15.27 percent below its 200-day moving average of €40.63, pointing to a consolidation phase in which investors remain cautious despite the strong twelve-month gain.

The core tension for IREN is straightforward. The contract momentum is real, the industry-wide financing commitment from NVIDIA and its partners provides a credible tailwind, and institutional buyers like Bank of America appear willing to accumulate through the turbulence. But the stock's inability to hold its highs suggests the market is waiting for proof that the $4 billion revenue target is achievable and that the freshly integrated Mirantis software business can be absorbed without friction. Whether the current weakness represents a buying opportunity or a fair warning will ultimately come down to how smoothly the company executes on those promises in the quarters ahead.
