IREN's Institutional Vote of Confidence Collides With a Halved Share Price

IREN's AI cloud backlog hits $4B with Microsoft, NVIDIA deals; institutions like Janus Henderson and BofA build positions despite 50% stock drop.

The disconnect could hardly be starker. IREN's stock sits roughly 50 percent below the record high it touched in early November, yet some of the world's largest money managers are quietly building positions. The explanation lies in a backlog that has grown so quickly the company has been forced to raise its own revenue targets — twice in quick succession.

The $4 Billion Backstop

IREN now guides to an annualized revenue run-rate of more than $4.0 billion in its AI cloud business, up from a prior target of $3.7 billion. The revision rests on a batch of multi-year contracts worth $2.8 billion signed with Microsoft, NVIDIA, Perplexity and Figure AI. Management says 85 percent of the updated target is already under contract, underpinned by an energy pipeline of 5 gigawatts.

The financing structure is worth pausing on. Customer prepayments attached to the new contracts cover roughly 45 percent of GPU capital expenditure — a signal that hyperscalers are willing to share the build-out risk, a pattern increasingly common across the AI infrastructure sector as buyers scramble for limited chip supply.

Capacity plans are equally ambitious: 480 megawatts of AI cloud capacity this year, scaling to 1.2 gigawatts by 2027.

Big Money, Bigger Positions

The institutional response has been notable. Janus Henderson increased its IREN stake by 439.4 percent during the first quarter, ending the period with 34,495 shares, according to a recent regulatory filing. Earlier this month, the California State Teachers Retirement System disclosed a new position in the stock.

Bank of America has also surfaced as a significant holder. A Schedule 13G filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission dated August 4 shows the bank owns roughly 21 million IREN shares, or 5.8 percent of the approximately 357.4 million shares outstanding as of April 30. While such a filing doesn't constitute a buy recommendation, large institutional positions are frequently read by investors as a marker of confidence.

The buying comes as the stock trades at €34.65 in German markets, up 2.82 percent on the day, but still 49.50 percent below its 52-week high of €68.61. The gap to the 50-day moving average of €39.71 stands at 12.75 percent — a reminder of the volatility that has defined the name.

Mirantis: The Vertical Integration Bet

The company closed its acquisition of Mirantis, a cloud software and services provider, last Tuesday. The price: approximately 12.6 million IREN shares plus around $40 million in cash, restricted stock units and other components.

The rationale is strategic depth. Mirantis brings capabilities in AI workload orchestration, monitoring and customer support — the software layer that sits between raw GPU hardware and the end customer. IREN's broader thesis is to control the entire stack, from data centers and compute units to the software that runs on top, rather than simply renting out floor space and power.

That ambition carries execution risk. Every integration consumes time, capital and management attention, and the competition for GPU capacity doesn't pause for anyone.

In connection with the transaction, IREN filed a prospectus with the SEC to register 11.9 million common shares that former Mirantis investors and employees can sell — a potential overhang the market will be watching.

The Hardware Backbone

To service the contracted volumes, IREN confirmed earlier this month a $1.6 billion purchase agreement with Dell for air-cooled NVIDIA Blackwell systems. The hardware is intended to back the $3.4 billion managed services contract in the AI cloud segment, with commissioning at the Childress, Texas site slated for early 2027.

A Transition Visible in the Numbers

The operational picture shows a business mid-transformation. March-quarter revenue fell to $144.8 million from $184.7 million a year earlier. A 94.2 percent jump in AI cloud revenue wasn't enough to offset declining Bitcoin mining income — a reminder that the pivot away from crypto carries a near-term cost.

Weiss Ratings downgraded the stock from "Hold" to "Sell" in late July, an assessment that landed squarely in the middle of the business model shift. Simply Wall St, meanwhile, pegs fair value at $71.48 based on aggressive growth assumptions — a figure that warrants caution given current volatility.

Analysts Split on the Pace

The sell-side remains broadly constructive but divided on magnitude. Macquarie reaffirmed its Outperform rating with a $90 price target in mid-July. Canaccord Genuity set a $79 target on July 21, implying upside of 89.18 percent at the time. H.C. Wainwright followed the next day, lifting its target from $85 to $90, while Bernstein confirmed its Buy rating the same day.

The range of views suggests genuine optimism about the model, tempered by an inability to precisely quantify when the backlog converts to recognized revenue.

The Near-Term Scorecard

The next quarterly report arrives on September 16 — the moment of truth for whether the contract momentum translates into actual revenue. Until then, the stock remains what it has been for months: a study in contradiction, where a halved share price meets a backlog that keeps growing, and where institutional buyers see a discount while the market demands ever more proof.
