There are moments when a company's share price and its press releases appear to be describing two entirely different businesses. IREN is living through one of those moments right now.

The company has spent the past year repositioning itself from a Bitcoin miner into an AI-cloud infrastructure provider, and the contract pipeline tells a story of spectacular ambition. The share price, however, has been telling a more cautious tale. After shedding 7.7 percent over the past week, the stock closed Friday at 35.83 euros, sitting roughly 48 percent below its early-November 52-week high.

The Numbers That Define the Transition

The March-quarter figures capture the pivot in stark relief. Revenue from legacy Bitcoin mining tumbled from 167.4 million to 111.2 million dollars, while AI-cloud revenue nearly doubled to 33.6 million dollars. Mining still dominates the mix, but the trajectories are heading in opposite directions — and that divergence is the crux of the entire investment thesis.

The transformation is being powered by a five-year, $9.7 billion agreement with Microsoft for AI-cloud services. The first "Horizon 1" building on the Childress, Texas campus was formally accepted by Microsoft last week, triggering the start of billing under the contract. Management has lifted its 2026 annualized run-rate target to above $4 billion, with 85 percent of that capacity already contracted.

Supporting the build-out is a series of additional agreements: multi-year contracts worth $2.8 billion with AI developers including Figure AI and Perplexity, plus the completed acquisition of Mirantis for $625 million. That deal, which closed recently, brings in cloud-infrastructure and Kubernetes-based orchestration technology — the software layer IREN needs to manage multiple large-client workloads across distributed sites. Nvidia has also awarded the Texas facility "Exemplar Cloud" status after testing its installed GB300-NVL72 equipment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

The roadmap calls for 480 megawatts of capacity by the end of 2026, expanding to 1.2 gigawatts the following year.

Institutional Money Is Voting

The disclosure filings paint a picture of accelerating institutional conviction. Goldman Sachs reported a passive stake of 9.4 percent in mid-August, representing roughly 33.6 million shares. Bank of America followed with a 5.8 percent position of about 21 million shares. BlackRock, meanwhile, grew its holding to just over 13.3 million shares as of June 30 — an increase of nearly 199 percent from its prior filing.

These inflows have coincided with the string of contract announcements and the Microsoft acceptance, suggesting that major investors are prepared to back the operational story despite the valuation swings.

Analyst commentary has been broadly supportive, though not unanimous. Bernstein's Gautam Chhugani called IREN a "rebel" of the industry on August 20, citing its capital-intensive model that controls the entire supply chain from land to GPUs, and reaffirmed a $100 price target with a "Buy" rating. H.C. Wainwright's Mike Colonnese pointed the same day to stronger pricing power than current models reflect. Needham's John Todaro, however, has held firm at "Hold."

The Skepticism Is in the Chart

The stock has recovered substantially from its August lows, yet it currently trades about 5.6 percent below its 50-day moving average of 37.34 euros — a sign that the recent sector-wide sell-off in "neocloud" names has caught IREN in its wake.

The market's hesitation is understandable. Valued on revenue, IREN commands a significant premium to the sector average — a multiple that only makes sense if the AI-cloud division scales as quickly as the contract pipeline promises. The Bitcoin revenue alone cannot support the current valuation.

There is a certain irony in the timing. Bitcoin just posted its strongest rally of the year, approaching the $80,000 mark, with crypto-linked names like MicroStrategy and Coinbase surging. For IREN, that means a higher Bitcoin price could at least temporarily bolster the economics of its remaining mining capacity — even as that business shrinks in relative importance.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company's balance sheet provides breathing room for the transition: $7.6 billion in cash, of which $1.7 billion is designated for specific purposes.

What Thursday Will Settle

The real test arrives on August 27, when IREN reports results for the fiscal year ended June 30, followed by an earnings call. Investors will be scrutinizing how quickly the billion-dollar contracts and the Mirantis integration translate into actual revenue — and whether the AI-cloud story can compensate for the decline in the legacy mining business.

The competitive context adds urgency. Hut 8 has just signed Nvidia leasing agreements worth up to $50 billion for a Texas data center, underscoring how the race for compute capacity has become the defining structural theme of the sector. IREN is betting that its Microsoft anchor and software acquisition give it a privileged position in that race.

Until Thursday's numbers land, IREN remains what it has been for months: a test case for whether Bitcoin miners can genuinely transform into AI infrastructure operators — or whether the market is left with two half-stories instead of one complete one.
