ITM Power's Lingen project delivers green hydrogen to Evonik, marking a milestone; JPMorgan raises target to 80p.

The distance between a hydrogen project's ribbon-cutting and its first commercial delivery is where most ventures in this industry stumble. ITM Power has just crossed that gap.

Green hydrogen produced at RWE's electrolysis facility in Lingen has now flowed through roughly 120 kilometres of pipeline to Evonik's chemical complex in Marl, marking the first time the fuel has moved through a complete industrial value chain at this scale — from production to transport to end-use by a paying customer. The delivery occurred during the plant's commissioning phase, a point at which many projects are still troubleshooting rather than shipping product.

A Reference Plant That Speaks Louder Than Order Books

The Lingen operation, part of the GET H2 Nukleus project, sees ITM Power and Linde Engineering supply two 100-megawatt electrolyser units to RWE, which owns and operates the facility. Evonik takes the output in Marl. For ITM Power, whose reputation has historically rested on smaller electrolyser contracts and pipeline announcements, this is the kind of proof-of-concept that order backlogs cannot provide — actual hydrogen reaching an industrial consumer.

The timing carries strategic weight. In February, the company lifted its fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to £40–43 million, an 11% increase over the previous £35–40 million range. A functioning flagship installation in Germany lends credibility to those numbers, suggesting the large-scale projects underpinning the forecast are genuinely gaining momentum.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ITM Power?

JPMorgan Adjusts Its View, Cautiously

The Lingen news landed alongside a price target revision from JPMorgan Chase & Co., which lifted its target on ITM Power shares to 80 pence from 60 pence while holding the rating at "Neutral." The bank's move acknowledges the operational progress without signalling a fundamental shift in profitability expectations — a more measured stance than some earlier, more bullish calls from other houses.

The Stock's Two-Sided Story

Market reaction has been characteristically restrained. In pre-market trading, the shares advanced 2.9% to €1.34, hovering near their 50-day average of €1.36 — evidence of a relatively stable trading range. The stock sits roughly 18% above its 200-day moving average, pointing to an intact medium-term uptrend, yet remains about 49% below its 52-week high of €2.58 from early summer.

The year-to-date picture is more dramatic: an 85% gain since January. But the annualised volatility of 64% tells its own story — investors have yet to translate operational milestones into a calmer valuation. The shares' distance from their peak suggests caution persists despite the demonstrable progress.

What the Numbers Show — and What They Cost

The company's last full-year results revealed the scale of its ambitions. Revenue climbed 58% to £26 million, while the order book swelled from £79.7 million to £145.1 million year-on-year. Cash reserves, however, contracted from £230 million to £207 million — a signal that ITM Power is ploughing substantial resources into expanding manufacturing capacity.

That spending has government backing. In April, Great British Energy and the UK's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero committed ÂŁ46.5 million in grant funding alongside a ÂŁ40 million equity participation to support production of the new Chronos electrolyser stack. A strategic partnership with Rheinmetall, aimed at building a Europe-wide network of decentralised synthetic fuel production sites, further underscores the company's push into large-scale deployment.

The August Reckoning

All eyes now turn to the annual results due in August, which should clarify how the Lingen progress translates into financial performance. For a company whose business model depends on the hydrogen economy's acceleration, the German milestone is the most tangible evidence yet that its technology can survive contact with industrial reality. Whether that operational proof converts into sustained profitability is the question the next earnings report will begin to answer.
