The first molecules of green hydrogen have finally travelled through a German pipeline to an industrial customer — yet ITM Power's share price responded with a 2.5 percent decline on the day. For a company whose technology made that delivery possible, the muted reaction reveals just how far the stock has run ahead of — and then fallen behind — its own narrative.

A Milestone Years in the Making

Around ten days ago, ITM Power confirmed that its PEM electrolysers at RWE's Lingen facility had produced green hydrogen for the first time, with the gas transported roughly 120 kilometres by pipeline to Evonik's chemical park in Marl. The project, part of the GET H2 Nukleus initiative, is slated to feature two 100-megawatt electrolysis units from ITM Power, combining for 200 megawatts of capacity.

The delivery matters beyond the technical achievement itself. Evonik, an industrial heavyweight dependent on reliable supply, is effectively testing whether electrolytic hydrogen can function at industrial scale. If the corridor operates dependably over months rather than days, hydrogen's status shifts from subsidised pilot project toward commodity. If costs or supply interruptions undermine it, the sector risks remaining an expensive niche.

The Stock's Two Conflicting Stories

ITM Power's equity has spent 2025 living two parallel lives. Since the start of the year, the shares have climbed 75 percent — a figure that speaks to substantial optimism already priced in before significant hydrogen volumes had even flowed. Yet that headline performance masks a brutal reversal from the spring peak: the current closing price of €1.27 sits roughly half below the 52-week high of €2.58 reached at the end of May.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ITM Power?

The technical picture reinforces the caution. The stock now trades beneath its 50-day moving average of €1.36, signalling that short-term momentum has turned negative despite the Lingen news. Investors who bought at the spring highs are nursing losses, while the strong year-to-date figure flatters a rally that began from a deeply depressed base.

Analysts Split on the Path Forward

The Lingen milestone has done little to unify analyst opinion. JPMorgan Chase lifted its price target from 60 to 80 pence on 5 August — a few days before the Lingen announcement — but retained a neutral rating, a stance the bank has not revised even after the operational breakthrough. Berenberg went further, raising its target to 110 pence with a buy recommendation, while Jefferies upgraded the stock to buy with a 200 pence target.

That wide dispersion — from cautious neutrality to aggressive conviction — captures the fundamental tension at the heart of ITM Power's investment case. The company has proven its technology can work in the field, but translating that proof into sustainable revenues and margins remains an open question. The market's tepid response to Lingen suggests investors are waiting for evidence that this milestone becomes a repeatable pattern rather than a one-off demonstration.

What Comes Next

For shareholders looking toward the annual results due in August, the pivotal question is straightforward: does Lingen mark the beginning of a reliable delivery series, or does it remain an isolated achievement? The answer, not the first pipeline filling, will determine whether the symbolic moment matures into a business model. Until hard financials provide that answer, the stock appears likely to remain caught between the sector's long-term promise and its near-term monetisation challenges.
