Kioxia has signed on as the newest innovation partner at Applied Materials' EPIC Center in Sunnyvale, California — a move that plants the Japanese NAND specialist alongside Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron inside a facility earmarked for roughly $5 billion in staged investment, released only as concrete customer projects get underway. The center is slated to begin operations before the year is out.

The alliance targets a bottleneck the industry can no longer engineer around. Conventional scaling of memory chips has run out of headroom for modern AI workloads, pushing the sector toward complex multi-chip stacking, advanced packaging and materials tough enough to survive high-volume production. Kioxia's contribution rests on its track record with advanced NAND structures, where leading layer spacing now sits at approximately 40 nanometers. Its PCIe 6.0 NVMe SSD line, including the GP1 series, underscores the same push toward AI infrastructure workloads.

That the world's four dominant memory producers would research foundational manufacturing methods under one roof says plenty about how the economics of chipmaking have shifted. Development costs have simply grown too large for any single company to shoulder the risk alone.

A Stock Split, Not a Sell-Off

For shareholders, the picture on the trading floor has been muddier than the technology story. Kioxia carried out a 1-for-3 stock split alongside its entry into the research consortium — a capital measure that lowers the nominal entry threshold for retail investors and makes it easier for existing holders to trim partial positions, but leaves the fundamental value of the company untouched.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Kioxia?

The equity changed hands at EUR 102.86 on the day covered by the primary report, a modest gain of 1.0% from the prior close of EUR 101.86. A separate reading put the shares at EUR 102.02, up 0.2%, essentially flat. Over a 30-day window, the stock shows a decline of 62%.

Why Sentiment Soured

The retreat has concrete drivers. Reuters pointed to warnings from executives at American AI model developers about a slowing pace of development, which seeded doubts across the sector. Adding to the uncertainty, Kioxia Holdings moved roughly two weeks ago to temper speculation about a US listing of American Depositary Shares. Preparations are underway, the company said, but no timetable, venue or method has been fixed — and the plans could be halted at any point.

CEO Hiroo Ota, speaking to Bloomberg about three weeks ago, ruled out deepening cooperation with SK Hynix, citing antitrust hurdles and existing joint ventures with Sandisk. Ota also made clear that Kioxia's priority is holding memory prices at elevated levels rather than pushing through further increases — a cautious stance that caps near-term earnings upside.

The Long Game Versus the Near Term

Operationally, the Applied Materials partnership anchors Kioxia deep inside the AI hardware innovation cycle, and the long-run payoff from advanced memory structures is not in dispute. What the market wants now is evidence that technological relevance converts into durable margins. Until Kioxia sends clearer signals on both the US listing and operating profitability, caution is likely to keep the upper hand — even as the company lays track for the era beyond the first wave of AI buildouts.
