Kioxia shares fell amid wider chip-sector caution, despite an S&P rating upgrade to BBB and planned increases to its TOPIX free-float factor.

Kioxia’s share price may be caught in the latest semiconductor downdraft, but the more consequential story is unfolding away from the trading screen. While the stock slid 9.1 percent yesterday to EUR 79.50 and then fell a further 7.1 percent in today’s session to EUR 81.20, the Japanese memory group is moving through a structural change in its shareholder base that could reshape how it trades in the TOPIX index.

On 8 October, Toshiba Corporation disclosed that its stake in Kioxia had fallen from 12.84 percent to 11.80 percent, with 1 October used as the record date in the filing. That comes as the Japan Exchange Group has decided to raise Kioxia’s free-float factor in the benchmark in stages: to 32.5 percent at the end of October, and then to 50 percent at the end of November.

The market weakness around the name is tied to broader forces rather than anything company-specific. Semiconductor shares across Asia have come under pressure amid rising caution about the pace of future artificial-intelligence investment, and Reuters reported that sentiment was also dented by news of technological progress at Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies. Those developments hit the whole sector even though ChangXin’s advances relate to DRAM, while Kioxia’s core business is NAND flash.

That disconnect has not stopped investors from selling first and asking questions later. In Kioxia’s case, the latest moves underline how easily memory stocks can be swept up in sector-wide de-risking when macro fears dominate.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Kioxia?

The share weakness stands in sharp contrast to a more upbeat signal from credit markets. S&P Global Ratings lifted Kioxia’s long-term issuer rating to BBB from BBB- last week and kept a positive outlook on the company.

S&P pointed to exceptionally strong earnings prospects and a resilient NAND and solid-state-drive market. In the secondary account, the agency also cited Kioxia’s solid net cash position and persistent demand for flash memory and SSDs used in enterprise applications and data centres.

Operationally, Kioxia is trying to reinforce that message with product launches aimed at high-end server customers. On Friday, the company began sampling its LD4 series, which is based on the eighth generation of BiCS FLASH technology. The drives are designed for hyperscale data centres and are being sent to selected customers in 15.36 terabyte and 30.72 terabyte versions ahead of a wider launch.

A day earlier, Kioxia also expanded its CM9 SSD range for corporate clients with direct liquid-cooled variants, again entering customer testing. The cooling angle matters because power use and heat management have become critical constraints in modern AI-heavy server architecture, and Kioxia is betting that specialised hardware can help it secure a stronger position in that segment.

Still, the company faces familiar industry risks. A larger supply of memory chips could intensify price competition, especially if Chinese rivals keep moving up the performance ladder. At the same time, investors remain wary that large cloud operators could slow spending on new data centres or stretch out orders after a strong run in technology shares.

For chart watchers, the 200-day moving average sits at EUR 83.25, a level that now serves as a key reference point. Kioxia’s next major test arrives on 30 October 2026, when Kioxia Holdings is due to publish second-quarter results at 18:45 Japan time after the close in Tokyo. That update should show whether data-centre demand is strong enough to offset the sector’s latest bout of caution.
