KNDS is stacking up committed business on one side of its ledger and showcasing hardware on the other — a distinction that matters for anyone tracking the unlisted defence group. A fresh ARTEC order for Schakal vehicles and the start of production on Norwegian tanks represent firm work, while a drone-defence demonstration and a prospective Qatari programme remain, for now, capability statements rather than signed revenue.

A 69-vehicle order with a long fuse

Rheinmetall disclosed that ARTEC, the joint venture it runs with KNDS Deutschland, has booked a further order for 35 Schakal vehicles for Germany and another 34 for the Netherlands. Deliveries are scheduled between May 2032 and November 2033 — a horizon distant enough that the deal does little for near-term revenue even as it thickens the venture's long-run backlog.

That binding character sets the Schakal contract apart from other recent KNDS news. Talks over a possible state shareholding and a vehicle programme for Qatar have yet to reach completion, whereas this order is already in hand.

Berlin's stake talks run on a separate track

Alongside the order flow, negotiations over ownership continue. French defence minister Catherine Vautrin told a parliamentary hearing on Tuesday that progress had been made in talks over the German government acquiring a 50% stake, to be taken over from the German owner families, Reuters reported.

KNDS chief executive Jean-Paul Alary has welcomed a possible federal involvement while making clear his preference for an initial public offering once market conditions allow — a position he first put to Reuters on 19 October. No state entry has been completed, so the ownership discussions bear on a possible future capital structure rather than on any vehicle contract already awarded.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying KNDS?

Norway moves to the shop floor

Manufacturing is already under way in Norway, where the plant is set to build 37 of the country's 54 new tanks. Concrete production, in other words, has begun — though the arrangement is not a fixed order. That leaves the Norwegian ramp-up and the additional ARTEC booking as the solid operational advances, with Qatar still sitting in the opportunity column.

Drone defence: demonstrated, not ordered

On the technology front, KNDS put its DSP10 counter-drone system through its paces on 22 October in a trial organised by the German army, showing various methods for taking down unmanned aircraft. During the exercise, the RAPTOR 2 system from Nuances Technologies seized control of a test drone, while an interceptor from AERIX destroyed a target — meaning the demonstration covered both hijacking a UAV and physically defeating one.

KNDS also said it intends to produce the AERIX interceptor on an industrial scale in due course. That ambition points to a possible next stage of development, but it equates neither to series production already running nor to secured sales. No order or contract was announced in connection with the event, whose commercial weight therefore rests on the capabilities shown and the planned industrial rollout.

The presentation fits a broader run of technology showcases. At the National Infantry Days on 14 October, KNDS displayed, among other things, a drone function package adaptable to vehicles plus robotics and radio equipment — useful product context, but no evidence of additional bookings.

What a real contract looks like

The gap between a demonstration and a signed deal is illustrated by the RENK agreement. On 14 October, KNDS Deutschland and RENK extended a contract worth roughly €130 million covering gearboxes, control units and gear selector switches for the LEOPARD 2 family, with deliveries slated for 2029–2032. Here, agreed shipments stand behind a stated contract value.

For the counter-drone system, the next economically meaningful step is converting the production intent into binding business. The trial proves capability; it adds nothing to the order book. And with no publicly traded KNDS share, the demonstration cannot be mapped to any immediate price reaction.
