Lenzing has set the terms of a fully underwritten rights issue aimed at shoring up its balance sheet, and the market's verdict has been swift. The Austrian fibre producer is issuing 34,756,362 new shares at EUR 8.65 apiece — a 42.5% discount to the theoretical ex-rights price — in a push to raise roughly EUR 300 million in gross proceeds.

The subscription period runs through 20 October, with a 10:9 ratio governing how many new shares existing holders are entitled to buy. Those who decline to participate will see their relative stake diluted, while those who subscribe can defend their position in the company.

A Balance-Sheet Fix With a Cost

For Lenzing, the transaction delivers fresh liquidity and a firmer equity base. For existing shareholders, it is a different story: the deep discount and the sheer volume of new paper have weighed heavily on the share price during the subscription window.

The stock has been under sustained selling pressure, hovering near its 52-week low of EUR 12.44. In recent trading the shares changed hands at EUR 12.62, down 1.7%, as market participants priced in the new terms while the company presses ahead with its refinancing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lenzing?

Berenberg Steps Back

Analysts have turned more cautious. Berenberg downgraded Lenzing from Buy to Hold and cut its price target from EUR 29.50 to EUR 17.00 — a move dated 2 October in one account and attributed to the prior Friday in another.

The broker cited several headwinds: the strain from the capital measure itself, an expected pullback by Suzano, and the fact that higher viscose and cotton prices have not flowed through to the fibre maker's results as strongly as hoped.

Shifting Ownership

The capital raise has coincided with changes among institutional holders. Goldman Sachs Group reduced its total position to 3.86%, according to a voting-rights notification, down from a previously reported 9.98%. NN Group N.V. also crossed a corresponding threshold.

Lenzing at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

With the subscription period not closing until 20 October, the execution of the capital measure remains the dominant force shaping sentiment around the fibre manufacturer.
