Lufthansa Trims Full-Year Profit Ceiling as Fuel Bill Climbs, Even as Third-Quarter Earnings Beat Forecasts
Published on 11/08/2026 at 19:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deLufthansa Group delivered a stronger-than-expected third quarter for 2026, but a heavier fuel bill forced the German carrier to lower the top end of its full-year profit guidance — a tension that framed a busy week of analyst revisions, a landmark Portuguese acquisition and a new long-haul route announcement.
Quarterly Results Top Estimates
The group posted adjusted operating profit of EUR 1.41 billion for the three months to September, a 6% increase on the prior-year period and ahead of what analysts had penciled in. Revenue for the same quarter climbed 9% to EUR 12.24 billion. The improved operating result came despite fuel costs that rose by EUR 543 million year on year, underscoring the group's ability to offset part of the cost pressure.
Guidance Narrowed on Higher Fuel Costs
For the full year 2026, Lufthansa cut the upper bound of its forecast for adjusted operating profit from EUR 2.2 billion to EUR 2.0 billion, while keeping the floor unchanged at EUR 1.7 billion. Management pointed to higher fuel expenses as the reason for the reduced ceiling.

Barclays and Bernstein Lift Price Targets
Analyst reactions diverged in scope but not in direction. Barclays upgraded the stock from "Underweight" to "Equal Weight" on Friday and raised its price target from EUR 7.50 to EUR 8.40, citing expectations of lower fuel prices following the US midterm elections. Bernstein Research also lifted its target that same day, moving from EUR 9 to EUR 9.50 while leaving its "Market-Perform" rating in place — meaning only Barclays adjusted its investment verdict alongside the target.
Shares Advance on Friday
Lufthansa stock gained 3.9% on Friday. No link between that day's move and the quarterly figures — which had already been released on Tuesday — has been established.
TAP Air Portugal Stake Signed, Pending Approval
Separately, Lufthansa confirmed on Tuesday that it had signed the contract with the Portuguese government to acquire an initial 44.9% stake in TAP Air Portugal for EUR 1.02 billion. The deal is not yet complete: closing remains subject to regulatory approvals, notably clearance from the European Commission. The agreed holding is explicitly structured as an initial minority position.
SWISS Sets Mumbai Launch Date
In a further operational update, SWISS announced plans to deploy Airbus A350 aircraft on the Zurich–Mumbai route from 15 December 2026. The service has been announced but not yet launched.
