Medtronic's VenaSeal Nears Full US Coverage as MiniMed Swap Ratio Hits Its Ceiling

Medtronic has secured reimbursement for VenaSeal across 96% of commercially and Medicare-insured patients in the United States, a milestone that removes one of the biggest practical hurdles facing new medical technologies. The figure, disclosed on October 3 alongside fresh global data from the company's Spectrum program, reflects how thoroughly the vein-treatment system has embedded itself in payer networks. For device makers, coverage decisions by major US insurers often determine whether hospitals and specialists adopt a procedure at all — without guaranteed reimbursement, clinicians tend to hold back. That barrier has now largely fallen for VenaSeal, opening the door to higher treatment volumes in chronic venous disease and sharpening Medtronic's competitive edge in the segment.
The Spectrum findings, presented the same day, document the technology's benefits in advanced stages of chronic venous conditions, adding clinical weight to the commercial push.
A Cluster of Payer and Regulatory Wins
VenaSeal's coverage gain sits within a broader run of reimbursement and clearance successes. Roughly a week before the announcement, Medtronic obtained Category I CPT codes from the American Medical Association for two additional systems: Altaviva, aimed at urge incontinence, and Symplicity Spyral, a hypertension therapy. Those billing keys take effect in January 2028, giving hospitals and payers a firmer planning horizon. Standardized codes of this kind simplify claims for outpatient procedures considerably, easing the administrative path for US physicians.
On the surgical side, the FDA granted 510(k) clearance for the navigated ApexCut EM blades, designed for sinus surgery and integrated with the company's existing Stealth AXiS ENT navigation platform. First clinical procedures in the US are slated for later in 2026. Extensions like this are intended to squeeze further revenue from established surgical platforms by pairing them with specialized single-use instruments.

Clinical Evidence and Trial Leadership
Medtronic has been building out the scientific case for its therapeutic systems in parallel. The 24-month results from the exploratory TITAN-2 study of the Altaviva system demonstrated statistically significant reductions in nocturia episodes among treated participants across all follow-up points. The company also named Ariana L. Smith, MD, of Penn Medicine as national principal investigator for the companion ENDURANCE trial, which will track 170 patients at as many as 30 US sites to reinforce the therapy's long-term evidence base.
MiniMed Separation Reaches Its Final Terms
Corporate restructuring has moved forward as well. In the spin-off of its diabetes unit MiniMed, Medtronic set the final exchange ratio at 4.5939 MiniMed shares for each tendered Medtronic common share — the upper bound of the range. The offer covered up to 225,361,295 MiniMed shares, a step that places the diabetes operations on an independent footing and frees resources for higher-growth core areas. The expiration of the exchange offer marks the completion of this phase.
Spending, Scale and Street View
Underpinning the long-term strategy is sustained investment in the product pipeline. In its recently published Impact Report for fiscal 2026, Medtronic put worldwide research and development spending at $2.9 billion. The company said it served more than 82 million patients globally during the reporting period and logged over 315 product approvals in key markets.
Investors have taken note of the restructuring. Barclays initiated coverage of Medtronic with an "Equal Weight" rating and a $95 price target. With a market capitalization of EUR 100.18 billion, the current valuation captures the balance between stable core markets and the lead times required before new products and reimbursement codes flow through to earnings.
Shares closed at EUR 79.00 on Friday, up 1.0% on the day. Since the new billing codes became known roughly a week earlier, the stock has advanced 3.0%.
