Mercedes-Benz Adds Steer-by-Wire to EQS as Buyback Passes 3.85 Million Shares

Mercedes-Benz has begun offering steer-by-wire technology across its electric flagship range, fitting the EQS limousine with the system worldwide with immediate effect. German buyers will pay EUR 2,975 including VAT for the digital steering setup, which dispenses with any mechanical link to the front axle.
The chassis upgrade lands alongside a steady stream of corporate news from Stuttgart. Between late September and early October, the carmaker repurchased a further 875,000 of its own shares, lifting the total bought back since the program launched on September 1, 2026 to 3,851,805.
Analysts Trim Targets Ahead of October 28
Sentiment around European automakers remains subdued, and two brokers cut their price objectives on the same day. UBS's Patrick Hummel lowered his target to EUR 45 from EUR 50 while keeping a "Neutral" rating, pointing to intensifying competition from Chinese manufacturers. HSBC moved in the same direction, reducing its target to EUR 61 from EUR 63 but sticking with a "Buy" recommendation.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?
Deutsche Bank Research took a more constructive line on October 9, reiterating "Buy" with a EUR 70 target. Analyst Tim Rokossa flagged several drags heading into the quarterly report: demand trends in China, the current model mix and higher raw material costs. In his view, the passenger-car division's operating margin could come in below its 3% to 5% target corridor.
Hummel's caution extends beyond the near term. He warned that weaker operating results and possible guidance revisions could push risks for the 2027 financial year further into the spotlight.
Deliveries Fall, Electric Sales Surge
The third-quarter sales tally painted a split picture. Group-wide deliveries of cars and vans came to 491,700 units, down 6% year on year. Battery-electric models moved in the opposite direction, climbing 52%, with Mercedes-Benz Cars setting a quarterly record of 68,400 units in that segment. Several electric models were sold out in Europe for the remainder of the year.
Investors will get the full financial picture on October 28, when the company publishes detailed third-quarter results for 2026. The stock last changed hands at EUR 39.77, leaving it down 34% since the start of the year and well below its 200-day moving average of EUR 50.30. Pre-market trading put the DAX-listed share at EUR 40.10, just 3.1% above its 52-week low of EUR 38.90.
