Mercedes-Benz adjusted EBIT dropped 15% to EUR 1.78 billion as it cut its 2026 Cars margin outlook to 2-3% on China weakness and higher costs.

Mercedes-Benz used a single day to showcase where its engineering budget is heading and, at the same time, to remind investors how much pressure its core business is under. The Stuttgart group unveiled research into window-based displays and an 800-volt power converter, while the market was still digesting third-quarter figures and a profit warning issued roughly a week earlier.

Headline Profit Masks the Real Story

On 28 October the carmaker reported group revenue of EUR 30.7 billion. EBIT came in at EUR 1.77 billion, and net profit reached EUR 1.52 billion. Those are comfortable-looking numbers on their own — but they describe a different measure from the operating performance that analysts actually track.

Adjusted group EBIT fell 15% to EUR 1.78 billion. That is the figure that exposes the earnings squeeze, even though Mercedes-Benz remains solidly in the black. A positive bottom line, in other words, is no proof that margins or cash generation have turned a corner.

Guidance Cut Points to China and Rising Costs

The profit warning issued about a week before the results sharpens the picture. Management blamed an increasingly difficult market environment in China, along with anticipated higher costs in the fourth quarter, including elevated material expenses.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

For Mercedes-Benz Cars, the company now expects a full-year 2026 adjusted return on sales of 2% to 3% — a lower bar than before the guidance revision. At group level, EBIT is projected to land at the prior-year level, while free cash flow from the industrial business is seen well below last year's figure. The strain therefore hits both the margin and the expected cash inflow.

One item that cannot be quantified is the already-announced sale of the European fast-charging network to Electra. Neither party disclosed a purchase price, so the ownership change alone offers no reliable yardstick for what the transaction contributes to the group's finances.

Analysts Split on Value, Not on the Pressure

Broker reactions show that weaker business expectations do not automatically translate into a sell recommendation. What matters is how much upside analysts still see in the stock after the guidance cut.

On Friday, DZ Bank's Michael Punzet trimmed his fair value from EUR 55 to EUR 48 while keeping his "Buy" rating, citing persistent weakness in China and the lowered outlook. UBS took a more cautious line, cutting its price target from EUR 45.00 to EUR 42.50 on 28 October and reaffirming its neutral stance. Both houses marked down their valuation benchmarks but arrived at different investment verdicts; the common thread is earnings pressure. China, the cost burden and delivery on the reduced margin target remain the decisive variables.

Displays, a Converter and a Pair of Smart Glasses

On the technology side, Mercedes-Benz presented LED elements embedded in vehicle glass that can surface warnings and traffic information when needed, alongside a holographic display projecting content onto the windscreen. Both put information directly on the glass, though through different technical routes. For investors, these are research directions rather than revenue contributors — a technology showcase is not the same as the launch of a model equipped with it.

Mercedes-Benz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A power converter for future electric vehicles supports 800-volt applications and currently reaches up to 3 kW. According to the company it suits both AC and DC use and could potentially enable bidirectional charging — a development prospect, not a confirmed production feature.

More tangible is the market step reported from China, where the updated long-wheelbase E-Class launched yesterday. Its cockpit, developed by the Chinese research team, integrates ByteDance's Doubao model into the virtual assistant, alongside Huawei HiCar and Apple CarPlay. Mercedes-Benz and Meta also announced that Meta smart glasses will be integrated into the vehicle experience from early 2027, initially in models running MB.OS, with navigation, the Mercedes assistant, messages and calls relayed through the glasses.

The takeaway for shareholders is a clear dividing line: introduced cockpit functions, announced integrations and longer-horizon research all sit on the same development track, but only the first of those is already earning money.
