Metaplanet's market cap falls below its Bitcoin holdings, prompting CEO to weigh buybacks amid a 45% YTD stock decline and aggressive BTC accumulation.

A curious inversion has taken hold at Metaplanet. The Japanese Bitcoin treasury company's market capitalization has slipped below the value of the cryptocurrency sitting on its balance sheet — a gap that management is now openly contemplating closing through share buybacks.

The so-called mNAV ratio, which compares the company's market value against its Bitcoin reserves, touched 0.90x on Friday. That means investors are effectively pricing Metaplanet's equity at a 10 percent discount to the digital assets it holds. For a firm whose entire thesis rests on accumulating Bitcoin, the signal is hard to ignore.

CEO Simon Gerovich responded swiftly, stating that the company is "seriously considering" repurchasing its own shares, with funding to come from an existing $500 million credit line secured against its Bitcoin holdings. The stock closed Friday at EUR 1.23, up 1.54 percent on the day — a modest bounce that does little to offset a brutal 44.91 percent decline since the start of the year. The shares remain roughly 80 percent below their 52-week high of EUR 6.16 and trade 34.45 percent under their 200-day moving average.

A Buyback Program That Hasn't Bought Anything

The rhetoric around repurchases stands in sharp contrast to the company's actual track record. According to a company statement on August 3, not a single share was acquired under the existing buyback authorization through July 31 — despite the board having approved repurchases of up to 150 million shares. Gerovich's recent reference to the credit line as a funding source marks the first time management has concretely tied the two together, but investors will be watching closely to see whether words translate into action.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

The disconnect is emblematic of a broader tension: Metaplanet keeps building its Bitcoin war chest, yet the market keeps marking down the equity. In early July, the company purchased 2,823 Bitcoin for $225 million, lifting its total holdings to 43,000 coins worth approximately $2.6 billion. That acquisition was part of an aggressive treasury strategy that targets 100,000 Bitcoin by year-end and 210,000 by the end of 2027 — an ambition that would require roughly $10 billion in additional capital at current prices.

New Funding, Same Story

The capital-raising machine shows no signs of slowing. On July 17, Metaplanet's subsidiary Bitcoin Japan signed an agreement with the EVO Fund for up to 9.66 billion yen (about $59.5 million) in zero-coupon convertible bonds and share subscription rights. The first tranche of 662 million yen, roughly $4 million, was earmarked immediately for Bitcoin purchases.

Yet the market's response has been muted at best. The stock barely moved following the announcement, and a broader pattern has emerged: each new funding round adds to the Bitcoin balance but does little for the share price. The company's removal from the S&P Japan Mid Cap 100 index in late June further dented its institutional visibility, even if the operational impact remains unclear.

Income Generation Cools

The options-based Bitcoin Income Generation business, a key revenue pillar, is showing signs of strain. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026, the segment generated operating income of 1.747 billion yen (about $11 million) — a 41 percent decline from the prior quarter. First-half income from the segment totaled 4.717 billion yen. On a rolling twelve-month basis, however, the picture is brighter: income rose to 11,396.4 million yen from 10,779.7 million yen in the previous quarter.

The first quarter also brought a hefty net loss of 114.5 billion yen, driven primarily by mark-to-market losses on the Bitcoin portfolio at the balance sheet date. That accounting hit underscores the volatility inherent in a strategy that ties corporate earnings directly to cryptocurrency prices.

Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Building the Ecosystem

Beyond the Bitcoin accumulation, Metaplanet is laying groundwork for a broader financial platform. The acquisition of Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen, completed in June, is expected to be fully consolidated by the end of August, after which the unit will operate as Metaplanet Securities. The move represents the first concrete step in "Project Nova," the company's plan to build a Bitcoin-centric financial ecosystem.

That vision extends to the debt markets as well. Metaplanet is jointly studying the development of Bitcoin-collateralized corporate bonds settled in yen stablecoins, working with stablecoin issuer JPYC and tokenization platform Progmat. Analyst Mark Palmer of Benchmark reaffirmed his buy rating on July 27 with a price target of 405 yen, citing the strategic value of the Siiibo acquisition in building Bitcoin-linked financial products.

What's Next

Two dates loom large. On August 13 at 9 a.m. Tokyo time, Metaplanet releases second-quarter 2026 earnings; four days later, August 17 marks the record date for an extraordinary general meeting. Both events should offer clarity on whether the buyback talk becomes buyback action — and whether the market's discount to the company's own Bitcoin holdings finally begins to close.
