Metaplanet's Two-Speed Strategy: Building a Regulated Crypto Bank While the Market Punishes the Stock

The gap between Metaplanet's corporate ambition and its share price has rarely been wider. On one side, the Tokyo-listed company is executing a transformation from a pure Bitcoin hoarder into a regulated securities firm with ambitions to lend against its crypto holdings. On the other, investors keep selling — the stock closed at 456 yen in Tokyo trading on Wednesday after a roughly four percent drop, while the German-listed line traded at 1.21 euros, down 1.79 percent on the day.
The market's skepticism is not hard to quantify. Metaplanet shares stand 46.27 percent lower since the start of the year and have shed 78.53 percent over the past twelve months. The distance from the 52-week high of 6.16 euros, set on August 11 last year, now measures 80.55 percent. The 200-day moving average sits at 1.89 euros, meaning the stock trades 36.59 percent below that benchmark — a textbook sign of a persistent downtrend. With annualized 30-day volatility running at 79.11 percent, the market is effectively admitting it cannot price this company with any confidence.
The License That Changes the Playbook
The centerpiece of Metaplanet's pivot is the acquisition of Siiibo Securities, a Tokyo-based brokerage. The deal was signed in June 2026 and closed on July 13, 2026, for 2.1 billion yen. Siiibo is slated to be renamed Metaplanet Securities Inc. by the end of August 2026, bringing with it a first-class securities dealer license in Japan.
That license is the strategic prize. It allows Metaplanet to move beyond simply accumulating coins and instead sell regulated Bitcoin yield products directly to Japanese households — a departure from the MicroStrategy playbook the company had long followed. The ambition is to tap into the vast pool of Japanese household savings, though concrete products remain a distant prospect.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?
From Hoarding to Lending
The transformation does not mean the accumulation has stopped. Metaplanet added 2,823 BTC during the second quarter of 2026, bringing its total holdings to exactly 43,000 BTC as of July 2, 2026. That figure stands in contrast to the 35,102 Bitcoin the company reported holding at the end of 2025.
The coins are no longer meant to sit idle. On July 10, 2026, Metaplanet launched a research initiative with JPYC and Progmat to explore Bitcoin-collateralized lending products, including tokenized corporate bonds settled in yen stablecoins. The project remains in an early experimental phase, with no products yet issued and no revenue generated.
Alongside this, Metaplanet Ventures has been building a presence in Japan's stablecoin infrastructure. The investment arm participated in an expanded funding round for JPYC, the yen stablecoin issuer, worth approximately 38 million dollars. Metaplanet Ventures had previously invested 400 million yen in JPYC back in March. The latest round also drew a 1 billion yen investment from logistics group AZ-COM Maruwa, which plans to route payments to roughly 2,300 contract partners through JPYC.
The Weight of a Weak Bitcoin Market
The broader crypto environment is doing Metaplanet no favors. Bitcoin has broken through several technical support levels — 73,800, 71,500, 68,000 and 66,900 dollars — and chart analysis points toward a potential decline into the 61,100 to 61,700 dollar zone. For a company whose balance sheet is essentially a leveraged bet on the cryptocurrency, that trajectory is painful.
The pressure is visible across the sector. US rival Strategy sold approximately 1,638 Bitcoin between July 27 and August 2 for about 104.73 million dollars — roughly 15 percent below its own acquisition cost — to fund dividend payments and share buybacks. Strategy's market valuation now sits at 0.68 times its net asset value, meaning the market prices the company below the value of its own Bitcoin holdings. For Metaplanet shareholders, that is a sobering precedent: even established Bitcoin treasury firms are being forced to touch their reserves when prices stay weak.
Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
A Capital Raise With a Familiar Pattern
Against this backdrop, Metaplanet approved a foreign capital increase on Wednesday. The proceeds from new share and option issuances will fund further Bitcoin purchases and reduce existing debt. The move follows the established playbook the company has used to position itself as one of the largest publicly traded Bitcoin holders outside the United States.
The early capital round of 21 billion yen — roughly 137 million dollars — financed the aggressive Bitcoin buying of recent months. Now the focus shifts to operational execution. The dilution inherent in each new capital raise, combined with the stock's direct exposure to Bitcoin's price swings, explains much of the market's reluctance.
The strategy is bold, and the regulatory license gives it genuine substance. But until tokenized credit products actually reach the market and generate real cash flows, the vision remains theoretical. The wide gap between the share price and its long-term moving averages suggests investors are not yet willing to pay for that future — and the more likely scenario is continued turbulence rather than a swift return to calm.
