Micron's 265% Run Meets a Chinese Challenger and a Buyback With Strings Attached

Micron slips 2.1% to EUR 900.40 as CXMT DRAM progress and soft OpenAI revenue views weigh on chips, after a 265% year-to-date rally.

A sector-wide shudder over Chinese memory advances and softer OpenAI revenue expectations knocked semiconductor names lower to start the trading week, dragging Micron Technology down 2.1% to EUR 900.40 in German trading. The pullback lands on a stock that has already climbed 265% since the start of the year — a run that has fundamentally changed what investors demand from the memory chipmaker.

The immediate trigger was twofold. Reports of technological progress by China's CXMT in advanced DRAM stoked fears about Micron's technological lead in high-performance memory, the backbone of modern data centers. At the same time, muted revenue expectations tied to OpenAI weighed on AI-adjacent names across the board. Last week, Micron had already slid alongside heavyweights Nvidia and Broadcom, a reminder of how little doubt the market currently tolerates about future growth rates.

That CXMT is closing the gap touches a genuinely sensitive nerve. Micron's margins lean heavily on its leadership position in high-performance memory. Still, the fear of an abrupt margin collapse looks premature — a technological edge built by Western manufacturers cannot be erased overnight. And after an unprecedented rally, Micron is simply moving through a phase in which many market participants lock in profits and treat any sector headline as a welcome excuse to consolidate.

The Operating Record Behind the Valuation

The hard numbers hardly suggest a business losing its footing. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, which ended September 3, Micron reported record revenue of $54.23 billion. Net income under GAAP came in at an even more striking $37.70 billion, underscoring how demand for memory solutions is pushing margins higher.

Management has raised the bar further for the months ahead. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, the company guided to revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion, with adjusted diluted earnings per share of $38.15 and a calculated variance of one dollar. Those targets leave almost no room for operational disappointment — any small dip in volumes or pricing could trigger meaningful corrections given how tightly stretched expectations have become.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

The product pipeline is advancing in parallel. Sampling has begun for 512GB DDR5 RDIMM modules, while 7600 PCIe Gen 5 and 9650 PCIe Gen 6 SSDs are already shipping to customers. Micron continues to occupy precisely the niches that high-performance computing cannot do without. Analysts raised their price targets for the stock a little over a week ago, reinforcing confidence in the earnings power of coming quarters.

A Buyback With Regulatory Strings

Capital allocation also moved into focus on Thursday, when the board raised its share repurchase authorization to a total of $35.16 billion. On its face, that is a clear signal of strength: a company retiring its own shares on that scale is expressing faith in its earnings power and supporting earnings per share.

Investors should look closely at the conditions attached, however. Repurchases may not begin before December 9, 2026, and they are subject to restrictions from agreements tied to the CHIPS Act. Government subsidies and political requirements create a tight corset that limits managerial freedom on capital returns. The tension is plain: Micron commands enormous liquidity but remains partly bound by political conditions that can narrow its room to maneuver.

A quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share was also announced, payable October 29, 2026. Even with the constraints, a buyback of this magnitude sends a distinct message to the capital markets — management trusts the strength of its own cash flows.

A Tightrope at Record Levels

Since the analyst target hikes just over a week ago, the stock has slipped 1.1%. That optimistic voices no longer produce automatic gains points to growing caution among investors. The market has largely priced in the current record environment and now demands tangible evidence that the boom is sustainable.

The distance to the 52-week high of EUR 1,103.80 currently stands at minus 17%, reflecting the consolidation of recent weeks. Enormous profitability combined with the planned capital return provides support on the downside. Even so, the signs of a demanding valuation that requires flawless quarters are hard to ignore. Should momentum in the first fiscal quarter actually deliver the targeted $61.5 billion, the foundation should hold. Anyone invested needs to keep both the regulatory framework and the high expectations bar in view — a continuation of the rapid ascent will no longer be a sure thing.
