Micron's Sold-Out Memory Bet Faces a Two-Front Test

Micron's HBM capacity is sold out through 2027, but Taiwan strike threats and CXMT's new DRAM add risk before the Sept 30 earnings report.

For decades, memory chips obeyed a brutal rhythm: every shortage invited a wave of overinvestment that crushed prices, margins, and share prices alike. Micron Technology is now testing whether artificial intelligence has broken that cycle for good.

The stock has climbed 281% since the start of the year and was quoted pre-market at EUR 959.40, a rally built on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) — the stacked chips that feed modern AI accelerators. Micron's capacity for HBM3E and the upcoming HBM4 is fully committed through calendar 2027, and management has signaled that demand stretches into 2028. Long-term customer contracts with binding purchase commitments now cover parts of the conventional DRAM and NAND business, replacing the old price swings with multi-year supply relationships.

Earnings on a Different Scale

The depth of that shift will be visible on September 30, when Micron reports fourth-quarter figures for its fiscal year. The company has guided toward quarterly revenue of roughly USD 50 billion. Wall Street expects adjusted earnings of USD 31.43 per share for the closing quarter, against just USD 3.03 a year earlier, with analysts projecting nearly USD 73 per share for the full year — numbers that would have been unthinkable in the memory industry's earlier era.

Labor Unrest at the Manufacturing Core

Yet the boom has a second edge. According to Reuters, Micron announced on September 11 that employees in Taiwan will receive special bonuses of up to 68 months' pay for fiscal 2026, with a guaranteed minimum cash payout of T$1.7 million. Staff worldwide are to share in the rewards after the exceptional year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

That generosity has not settled the dispute. Reuters also reported that the relevant union in Taiwan warned on September 15 of steps toward a strike unless the chipmaker establishes a permanent profit-sharing system. Worker representatives had already demanded on September 1 that 15% of operating profit be distributed to employees starting next fiscal year.

The standoff matters because Taiwan is Micron's most important manufacturing hub. When even record one-time bonuses fail to keep the peace, operating stability can develop cracks — and production costs can rise structurally.

A Chinese Challenger Emerges

External pressure is building at the same time. On Sunday, China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) reported the start of mass production for its G5 DRAM platform, a technological advance that touches Micron's global memory position alongside Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Samsung, for its part, plans to roughly double HBM4 output next year.

The competitive field is tightening on other fronts too. Industry estimates suggest the United States will lack up to 157,000 microelectronics workers by 2030, complicating Micron's planned fab construction in Upstate New York. Intel chief Lip-Bu Tan recently warned of persistent memory shortages through 2027, underscoring how unusual this phase is.

The September 30 Verdict

Investors have so far shrugged off the friction, rewarding the growth with a 278% gain year-to-date. At EUR 953.10, the stock trades about 14% below its 52-week high.

The September 30 report will have to show whether Micron can justify expectations that have risen as fast as its share price — and whether the memory market's old cyclical laws have truly been suspended, or merely postponed.
