Microsoft shares slipped 2.1% to EUR 470.75 on Friday, caught in a broad technology selloff that swept across Wall Street. The pullback leaves the stock just 4.4% below its 52-week high of EUR 492.40 — a modest dent for a company whose shares have still gained 14% since the start of the year.

The trigger for the sector-wide retreat was a familiar worry with a new twist: whether the industry's colossal spending on artificial intelligence can be sustained. Investors are growing uneasy about how long companies can keep up their hefty capital outlays, and rising bond yields have sharpened that concern. Data-center operators, in particular, face mounting skepticism over whether they can generate sufficient returns quickly enough to service their debts as financing costs climb. Reports from Reuters also pointed to fears of intensifying Chinese competition as an additional drag on sentiment. In the S&P 500, the vast majority of technology names closed lower, according to AP.

Analysts Look Past the Dip

Even as the broader sector wobbled, research houses stayed firmly in Microsoft's corner ahead of the company's quarterly report. Several firms raised their price targets in quick succession.

UBS analyst Karl Keirstead lifted his target to $675 from $525 while reaffirming a Buy rating. Citigroup followed on the same day, nudging its target up to $636 from $600 and maintaining its Buy call. StoneX analyst Yi Fu Lee also raised his target, moving to $600 from $525 and reiterating a buy recommendation. The common thread: long-term demand for Microsoft's cloud and software products remains intact, even if infrastructure spending weighs on margins in the near term.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

A Regulatory Cloud Gathers Over London

Beyond the market's mood swings, a more structural challenge is taking shape in the UK. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed designating Microsoft with strategic market status within its enterprise software ecosystem and has launched a consultation before any final decision.

Such a designation could open the door to interventions targeting Microsoft's established product bundling. Reuters reported that the review focuses particularly on how applications such as Teams and Excel are integrated with the Copilot AI assistant family. The CMA is also examining potential barriers to switching cloud providers, security solutions, and software licensing models. Microsoft has pushed back against the authority's characterization. The consultation runs until November 13, 2026.

Betting on Homegrown Silicon

While regulators circle, Microsoft is pressing ahead with efforts to reduce its reliance on outside chip suppliers. The Azure Maia 200 processor is already in production, and its successor, the Maia 300, has been announced for 2027. From that year, Microsoft plans to deploy these systems at multi-gigawatt scale, positioning the Maia platform as the primary inference engine for its own services.

Insider Sale Followed a Pre-Set Plan

On the executive floor, a scheduled transaction drew routine attention. A mandatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission showed that CFO Amy Hood sold 7,305 Microsoft shares on October 13. The sale was executed under a pre-arranged trading plan adopted on June 10, 2026, in accordance with Rule 10b5-1 — a mechanism designed to let executives trade on fixed timelines and criteria, independent of any inside knowledge.

Investors will get a clearer read on the actual business trajectory and the dynamics of the AI segment shortly. Microsoft is due to report first-quarter results for fiscal 2027 after the US market close on October 28, 2026.
