Microsoft's Decision-1 Bets on Structured Choices Over Chat as Xbox Spins Up XP Unit

Microsoft shares finished Friday at EUR 477.75, a gain of 2.5%, as a broad rebound across US technology names lifted the stock back toward record territory. The advance left the equity just 0.4% shy of its 52-week peak of EUR 479.45, recovering ground lost a day earlier when investor jitters over partner OpenAI's revenue trajectory weighed on the sector.
Beneath the price action, the company rolled out a pair of strategic moves that pull in opposite directions — one pushing deeper into enterprise automation, the other reshuffling its entertainment assets.
A Nine-Billion-Parameter Tool That Skips the Conversation
Microsoft's newly published Decision-1 model takes an unusual path for a company so closely tied to generative text. Rather than producing prose, the system evaluates predefined options, returning calibrated probabilities for a fixed set of choices. The architecture rests on Alibaba's open Qwen3.5-9B base, which Microsoft fine-tuned for structured decision tasks across nine billion parameters.
The target applications are decidedly unglamorous: automated corporate workflows, data classification, and the routing of internal queries. Access runs through Microsoft Foundry at USD 0.042 per million input tokens, with output tokens carrying no charge at all.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?
Early internal adopters include the Xbox research team, which processed more than 10,000 pieces of player feedback through the tool and reported markedly faster turnaround than general-purpose language models delivered. The technology also saw use in validating responses within the Copilot environment.
Strategically, the release signals Microsoft's widening distance from any single model vendor. CEO Satya Nadella has argued previously that enterprises should avoid depending on one provider, and Azure AI Foundry now hosts a broad mix of model architectures. Future Decision-1 releases are slated to include variants built on Microsoft's own work as well as OpenAI models.
XP Takes Shape as Xbox Restructures
On the gaming side, the company unveiled a new business unit called XP on Thursday. The division consolidates film, television, consumer products, strategic partnerships, and live events under president Kayleen Walters. Maria Angelidou-Smith simultaneously steps in to lead Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft.
The reorganization lands amid broader upheaval in the gaming arm. Xbox faces sweeping restructuring through the current fiscal year, with studios being spun out and positions eliminated — a response, management says, to persistent margin pressure in the platform business. Cloud services and AI infrastructure remain the central focus for the quarters ahead.
Copilot Gains Local Muscle, and a Regulatory Headwind
Product news extended beyond the AI model itself. Microsoft introduced new GitHub Copilot capabilities on Wednesday that let developers write code through local AI models running directly on their devices. To govern what autonomous assistants may touch, the company rolled out Microsoft Execution Containers, a framework controlling access to files, networks, and system resources.
Microsoft at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Not every development was welcome. Reuters reported that the US government has temporarily suspended Microsoft and other technology firms from a green-card program for foreign skilled workers — a hurdle in the company's home market.
Wall Street Warms Up Ahead of October 28
Analysts offered a counterweight. Melius Research upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy on October 5, attaching a USD 665 price target. The firm pointed to sustained corporate demand for security solutions and governance policies governing AI deployment.
Investors will get a fuller read on the business later this month. Microsoft has confirmed it will report first-quarter results for fiscal 2027 on October 28, after the US market close.
