Moderna's Melanoma Win Leaves the Hard Part Unanswered: Making It Pay

Moderna has cleared the scientific hurdle that mattered most to investors. Whether it can clear the commercial one is a separate question — and it is the question now driving the stock.

The biotech's shares have surged 573% since the start of the year, a run that reflects how dramatically expectations have been reset. But the Wall Street Journal argued Thursday that the market has already treated further success as a given, leaving little room in the valuation for the manufacturing, approval and pricing obstacles that stand between a positive trial readout and a durable business.

A 42% Risk Reduction, and a Long To-Do List

The data at the center of the debate, released Thursday, come from the Phase 3 INTerpath-001 study. Intismeran autogene, developed with Merck, cut the relative risk of melanoma recurrence or death by 42% versus Keytruda alone when the two were combined; the risk of distant metastasis or death fell 38%. The trial enrolled 1,137 patients.

Those figures establish genuine clinical benefit. They do not settle the clinical file. Overall survival data remain immature and have yet to demonstrate a survival advantage, and the FDA has not granted approval. Moderna is preparing a US marketing application and points to a possible launch in 2027 — a plan, not a clearance.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?

RBC analyst Trung Huynh considers approval likely but the commercial outcome uncertain, noting that a standard therapy could deliver comparable benefit at far lower cost. Oxford professor Lennard Lee points to the same pressure point from a different direction: the complex and potentially expensive production process. Personalized manufacturing, by its nature, complicates the path from trial result to widespread use.

Two Analysts, Two Different Worries

Citi's Geoff Meacham reaffirmed a sell rating and an $80.00 price target on Thursday, questioning whether the treatment's advantage justifies the effort of collecting individual tumor material and producing a bespoke therapy for each patient. Bernstein, by contrast, kept a neutral stance and characterized the share-price pullback as profit-taking after a long-awaited announcement. The two views frame the same event differently: one interrogates the economics of personalization, the other the market's reaction to news it had spent months anticipating.

Media reports suggested the results fell short of the lofty bar investors had set during the preceding rally — a reminder that medical progress and equity valuation are judged on separate ledgers.

Beyond Melanoma, a Mixed Track Record

The valuation argument extends well past the melanoma program. Six of Moderna's seven Phase 3 studies have succeeded, with the CMV vaccine trial the lone failure — a record that shows how differently development programs can end. Nine studies are running for intismeran, including trials in lung, kidney and bladder cancer, and the company expects pivotal data on propionic acidemia before the end of 2026. Each represents optionality; none is a confirmed commercial win.

Moderna at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

CEO Stéphane Bancel measures the company by cash flow stretching back more than a decade rather than by quarterly earnings per share — a yardstick suited to a development-stage pipeline, though it does little to tell shareholders what the current price already discounts.

Moderna has scheduled an oncology investor event for today alongside its planned ESMO presentation of the study results, giving management a stage to address the cost-of-goods question directly. The next confirmed financial date is November 6, 2026, when third-quarter 2026 results are due. By then, the focus may have shifted from whether the vaccine works to whether the business built around it can.
