Moderna's Pipeline Gets Bigger, but the Analysts' Verdict Stays the Same
Published on 10/22/2026 at 14:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deModerna enters the coming weeks with two separate yardsticks to measure itself against: a high-stakes clinical readout and a quarterly earnings report. Both matter, and neither should be confused with the other.
Wall Street has already begun marking up its models on the strength of the cancer program. On Monday, Bank of America lifted its price target on the stock from $200 to $220 while keeping its rating at "Neutral." Analyst Alec Stranahan is looking for a positive data point from the upcoming ESMO presentation, with attention centered on the magnitude of benefit and what it might imply for renal cell and muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
TD Cowen followed a day later. Analyst Tyler Van Buren raised his target from $40 to $90 and stayed at "Hold," pointing to the oncology outlook as the driver. The firm also revised its estimate for the peak profit potential of the individualized cancer therapy to roughly $3.4 billion in 2035, up from $830 million previously, citing greater confidence in the adjuvant melanoma setting and in non-small cell lung cancer.
The two houses now sit far apart on valuation, and neither has moved off a cautious recommendation. That pattern is the takeaway: higher expectations for the pipeline are not the same thing as a ringing endorsement of the equity. A pair of target hikes, on its own, does not amount to a buy signal.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?
What the October 24 Readout Will and Won't Settle
Moderna and Merck will present full Phase 3 results from the INTerpath-001 study at the ESMO congress on October 24, 2026, comparing intismeran autogene plus Keytruda against Keytruda alone in patients with surgically resected high-risk melanoma. Moderna has scheduled an investor webcast for the same day.
The distinction that matters here is between a fuller disclosure and a fresh one. Initial results were already published in August; the complete presentation is expected to add detail that investors and treating physicians have been waiting for. The comparison against Keytruda alone remains the clinical reference point.
Beyond melanoma, the partners have laid out a broader development map. Moderna President Stephen Hoge and Merck research chief Dean Li outlined plans on October 15 for adjuvant studies in lung, kidney and bladder cancer, according to media reports. Smaller adjuvant trials in pancreatic and gastric cancer are also under way. Hoge, speaking at the STAT Summit in Boston that day, described a far wider field of exploration — language that is less flashy than a price target but a more precise description of the work ahead.
Those programs widen the horizon without substituting for results from any individual study. The gap between an ongoing trial, a planned indication and demonstrated clinical benefit has to stay visible.
One Success Is Not Yet a Template
The temptation is to pencil in the next tumor type before the data exist. Hoge's remarks push back against that. Testing the approach more broadly enlarges the field of possible applications; it does not answer where the therapy will actually deliver.
Moderna at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
That is why the analyst calls are best read as views on transferability. Stranahan and Van Buren are both looking past melanoma while the companies test additional uses. Economic projections are meeting a research program whose extra possibilities have yet to be verified. TD Cowen's profit figure, in particular, is a long-range modeling assumption — not a reported result and not a confirmed trajectory.
A Financial Checkpoint Follows the Science
Moderna has announced it will report third-quarter 2026 results on November 6, following the clinical event by less than two weeks. The sequencing is useful for investors: the ESMO data can sharpen the view on the melanoma approach, while the earnings release provides a separate accounting of the business.
Whether a broader cancer strategy with real economic weight emerges from all this remains its own question. Hoge's emphasis on further exploration is the better benchmark than a success story written in advance. Moderna should be judged not on the size of its possible future but on how well each next step holds up.
