The quiet at Nel ASA is itself becoming the story. Norway's hydrogen equipment maker has spent the weeks since its mid-July earnings release in a state of suspended animation — no fresh headlines, no analyst catalysts, and a share price that keeps circling below its key moving averages. For investors, the question is whether the order-book momentum reported in the second quarter marks a genuine turning point or merely a temporary reprieve.

The Numbers Beneath the Surface

The Q2 report, published on July 15, painted a picture of two opposing forces. Revenue from customer contracts fell to NOK 153 million, a 12 percent decline year-on-year, while total revenues and other income slipped from NOK 215 million to NOK 182 million. The bottom line showed a net loss of NOK 189 million, widening from a NOK 131 million deficit in the same quarter last year, driven largely by an operating shortfall of NOK 205 million.

Yet buried within those sobering figures was a striking counterpoint: order intake reached NOK 230 million — more than triple the prior-year level, representing a 224 percent jump. The order backlog stood at NOK 1.213 billion at quarter-end, backed by a cash position of NOK 1.328 billion. That liquidity cushion gives the company breathing room, though it offers no guarantees in a capital-intensive industry still finding its footing.

A Leadership Vacuum at the Top

Complicating the picture is an unresolved succession question. CEO HĂĄkon Volldal, who has led Nel since July 2022, confirmed during the mid-July conference call that he will step down to pursue another opportunity. He remains in post until a successor is found, subject to a six-month notice period, but the board's search has yet to yield a name.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

That open-ended uncertainty helps explain the market's reluctance to commit. Institutional investors tend to avoid taking fresh positions in companies with an unresolved leadership question, and Nel's share price reflects that wait-and-see posture.

Price Action: Stabilizing, But Not Yet Turning

The stock closed Friday at EUR 0.1994, up 1.63 percent on the day and 1.84 percent for the week — evidence of a tentative short-term recovery attempt. Zoom out, though, and the picture remains muted. The shares sit 6.95 percent below their 200-day moving average of EUR 0.2143, a technical signal that the medium-term trend has yet to reverse. Over twelve months, the stock is down a modest 1.97 percent, while year-to-date it has gained 5.61 percent — essentially flat against its January starting point.

The distance from more optimistic springtime levels is stark: at EUR 0.3655, the 52-week high reached in late May, the current price represents a 45.44 percent gap. The company's market capitalization stands at roughly EUR 361 million, a figure that remains sensitive to the industry's fluctuating order patterns.

The PA-Series Bet

One bright spot arrived in May, when Nel commercially launched its PA-Series, a new generation of pressurized alkaline electrolyzer platform. Management says the technology step-change improves cost, efficiency, and scalability of hydrogen production — a claim that now needs to be validated by commercial traction. The product launch, combined with the Q2 order surge, provided a summer boost to the investment narrative, but follow-through in the form of additional PA-Series contracts has yet to materialize.

A smaller signal came in April, when board chairman Arvid Moss purchased 100,000 shares at an average price of NOK 2.2547 — an insider vote of confidence that is now several months old and, by itself, carries limited weight.

Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What Autumn Holds

The next concrete checkpoint arrives October 21, when Nel is scheduled to release its third-quarter report. Between now and then, the stock appears likely to trade within its current range unless the board surprises the market with a leadership announcement. The fundamental case has arguably improved — the order intake jump and product launch give the company something to build on — but the share price has so far only grudgingly acknowledged that progress.

Whether the summer's momentum proves durable depends on a simple but elusive variable: more orders. Until those arrive, Nel remains a company in transition, caught between operational advances and a market waiting for confirmation.
