Nel ASA Pairs a 500 MW Herøya Build-Out With a Leadership Handover as Orders Outrun Billings
Published on 11/04/2026 at 04:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deNel ASA is pressing ahead with the first production line for next-generation pressurised alkaline electrolysers at Herøya, a project that will unfold in two stages: 500 MW of annual capacity targeted by the end of 2026, followed by an expansion to 1 GW during 2027. The company's own announcement frames both steps as ambitions rather than capacity already in place — a distinction that matters, because building a line is not the same as running it at load.
That operational milestone lands alongside a second development: a change at the top. Kjell Christian Bjørnsen, currently finance chief, has been named interim CEO, with Torbjørn Berg stepping in as interim CFO. Morten Holum is slated to succeed Håkon Volldal as chief executive no later than 1 May 2027.
A quarter that splits in two directions
The results Nel published roughly three weeks ago for the third quarter of 2026 capture the tension running through the whole story. Order intake climbed 339% year on year to NOK 253 million, and the order backlog stood at NOK 1,314 million. Revenue from customer contracts, by contrast, collapsed 63% to NOK 112 million. EBITDA came in at NOK -93 million, and the net loss reached NOK 141 million. Cash at the close of the quarter was NOK 1,078 million.
Those figures serve different purposes and should not be read as interchangeable yardsticks of progress. The backlog describes work still to be delivered; the cash position measures financial room to manoeuvre; the loss confirms that the economic strain persists. A fuller order book improves the starting point for future revenue without, on its own, proving a stronger earnings picture — and neither orders nor available funds amount to profitability.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?
Why the build-out needs the order book to convert
Management's capacity plans describe intended manufacturing capability, not output or utilisation. New production options do not by themselves remove the financial pressures weighing on the business. What counts is whether the surge in ordering eventually shows up in revenue — order intake and sales must not be treated as equivalent measures of progress.
The enlarged backlog is the commercial counterweight to the revenue decline, but it is neither booked turnover nor evidence that the planned line will be fully utilised. For investors, capacity expansion and business performance belong together while remaining separate tests of the company.
The brief facing the interim team
The leadership announcement supplies a personnel framework for the transition; it does not substitute for proof of an economic recovery. The yardstick is straightforward: execution on the backlog, the trajectory of losses, and progress on the production build-out. Whether that adds up to operational stabilisation will have to be demonstrated in the numbers.
Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Herøya represents a concrete operational step forward. It does not, taken alone, establish a turn in the business. Converting those NOK 253 million of orders into revenue remains the pivotal task — only the two developments moving in tandem would give the expansion a financial foundation to stand on.
