Nel ASA closed the third quarter of 2026 with a net loss of NOK 141 million, even as its order intake more than quadrupled — a divergence that puts the hydrogen specialist's commercial momentum and its income statement on sharply different trajectories. The figures, published on 15 October, show a business winning contracts faster than it can convert them into revenue.

Revenue from customer contracts fell 63% year on year to NOK 112 million. Management attributed the decline to lower activity in the alkaline electrolyser segment, where weak utilisation weighed on the top line. Higher PEM sales provided a partial counterweight but failed to offset the shortfall, leaving the group's overall development uneven across its technology platforms.

Total revenue and other income came in at NOK 138 million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation stood at minus NOK 93 million, keeping Nel firmly in loss-making territory on an operating basis as well.

Orders surge while execution lags

The demand side told a different story. Order intake jumped 339% to NOK 253 million in the quarter, running directly counter to the revenue trend. The order backlog reached NOK 1,314 million at period-end, up 34% on the prior year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

That backlog represents a starting point for future revenue rather than proof of a turnaround. Bookings and their eventual earnings impact are distinct quantities, and the reported losses remain a yardstick in their own right. How the pipeline converts into sales and margins will determine whether the stronger demand picture translates into financial recovery.

Leadership handover adds an interim layer

At the top of the company, a transitional arrangement takes effect before any permanent appointment. Chief financial officer Kjell Christian Bjørnsen assumes interim leadership from 1 November 2026, while Torbjørn Berg — previously responsible for finance at vice-president level — steps in as interim CFO during that period.

Morten Holum has been named to succeed Håkon Volldal as chief executive, taking over no later than 1 May 2027. Both the temporary responsibilities and the latest possible date for Holum's start are now fixed.

A orderly succession answers the governance question. It does not answer the commercial one: how Nel closes the gap left by weaker alkaline activity and returns the group to profit.

Rheinmetall pact is not an equipment order

Investors should also keep the letter of intent signed with Rheinmetall roughly three weeks ago in a separate category. The two companies intend to explore options for decentralised production of synthetic, low-carbon fuels for defence and critical infrastructure, combining Nel's electrolyser technology with Rheinmetall's Giga-PtX concept.

Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The agreement is not a confirmed equipment order. Cooperation prospects, binding bookings and realised revenue each carry different weight — and Nel's quarterly report so far shows stronger orders without any relief at the earnings line.

The test ahead is whether improvements in individual segments show up in group revenue and in the bottom line. Progress in PEM is a positive offset, not evidence of a company-wide recovery, and the leadership transition provides an organisational framework rather than a substitute for operational delivery.
