Nel ASA has booked far more business than it is currently billing — and that gap is now the central test for the leadership team about to take charge. Quarterly figures published roughly two weeks ago show order intake surging while revenue from customer contracts contracted sharply, leaving the Norwegian electrolyser maker without proof of an operating recovery.

Order intake climbed 339% to NOK 253 million in the third quarter of 2026, lifting the order backlog to NOK 1.314 million. Revenue from customer contracts, by contrast, fell 63% to NOK 112 million. The company attributed the decline to lower activity in its alkaline segment.

Backlog Is Not Revenue

That distinction matters more than any single headline number. A growing backlog improves the foundation for future sales, but it describes orders rather than work already delivered — and it does not by itself erase the weakness in current operations. Nor does the surge in bookings suggest demand is uniformly soft across every part of the business. What it leaves open is whether Nel can convert those orders into billable work at sufficient scale.

The segment split makes the point bluntly. PEM revenue advanced 65% to NOK 89 million in the third quarter, while alkaline revenue collapsed by 91%. Strength in one technology therefore cannot carry the assessment of the group on its own; management's task is to build on the PEM momentum while offsetting the alkaline shortfall.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

Earnings remain under pressure. Nel reported EBITDA of minus NOK 93 million and a net loss of NOK 141 million for the quarter. Cash and cash equivalents stood at NOK 1.078 million at period end.

Cash Buys Time, Not Profitability

That liquidity position is a snapshot of available funds, not a guarantee of how long they will last, and it sits alongside continuing losses rather than replacing an improvement in operating results. Investors should read the cash balance as headroom, not as an all-clear.

A similar caution applies to partnerships. The letter of intent agreed with Rheinmetall a little over three weeks ago covers the examination of joint options for decentralised production of renewable fuels, pairing Nel's electrolyser technology with Rheinmetall's Giga-PtX concept and its system-integration expertise. It is not a disclosed order. New avenues may broaden the business base, but only firm bookings — and their execution — strengthen the operating side.

Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Leadership Handover Adds a Deadline

The transition arrives at a moment of conflicting signals. Morten Holum is slated to succeed Håkon Volldal as CEO, taking the post no later than 1 May 2027. Until then, CFO Kjell Christian Bjørnsen becomes interim CEO from 1 November 2026, with Torbjørn Berg, previously VP Finance, stepping in as interim CFO.

For shareholders, the yardstick is straightforward. The pickup in orders has to show up in the income statement; only when higher revenue arrives alongside better earnings will the case for an operating stabilisation rest on firmer ground. A larger order book is a positive signal — a confirmed turnaround it is not.
