Nel ASA has entered an unusual stretch: the order book is expanding rapidly while the top line contracts sharply. For investors, that divergence is the crux of the story. A fuller pipeline improves the starting position for future business, yet it does nothing to erase the current earnings weakness — and the recently announced change at the top does not alter that tension.

Bookings Are Not Yet Revenue

Third-quarter 2026 figures lay out the gap plainly. Revenue from customer contracts fell 63% year on year to NOK 112 million, with weaker activity in the alkaline business weighing heavily on the result.

Order intake moved in the opposite direction, climbing 339% to NOK 253 million. Nel thus won additional business even as recognized revenue dropped. That distinction matters for any valuation: new orders signal demand, but they should not be conflated with revenue already booked or with improved profitability.

The order backlog reached NOK 1,314 million, 34% above the prior-year level. That provides a broader base for future revenue. Whether it translates into an economic recovery also depends on how the bottom line develops.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

Losses Temper the Signal

The operating picture remained weak in the reported quarter. Nel posted EBITDA of minus NOK 93 million and a net loss of NOK 141 million. At quarter-end, the company held liquid funds of NOK 1,078 million.

The larger backlog and the cash position therefore need to be read separately from the earnings situation. Orders point to business potential; losses reflect continued financial pressure. Order growth alone does not support a call that earnings have turned the corner.

Specific projects also warrant a nuanced read. The order reported on October 13 from an unnamed US technology company is worth roughly USD 12 million, with delivery of containerized PEM electrolyzers and related services scheduled for 2027. That is contracted business with delivery still ahead. The letter of intent signed with Rheinmetall about two weeks ago carries a different weight: it is non-binding, and a pilot project plus further steps remain subject to feasibility checks and mutual agreement.

The alkaline segment showed the steepest decline, with revenue there falling 91% to NOK 23 million — a drop that underscores the operating weakness. The stronger order position and the shrinking revenue line are not contradictory reports but different sides of the same corporate development.

Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A Leadership Handover in the Middle of the Test

Nel named Morten Holum on October 21 to succeed Håkon Volldal as CEO. Holum is expected to take the role no later than May 1, 2027. Until then, a transitional arrangement is in place: CFO Kjell Christian Bjørnsen is to serve as interim CEO from November 1, 2026, while Torbjørn Berg, previously VP Finance, takes over the finance function on an interim basis.

The change creates a personnel framework for the next phase but is not yet evidence of operational progress. The decisive question for investors remains economic: can Nel convert its stronger order position into revenue and better results? The bookings provide a foundation. The revenue decline and the losses show why a larger backlog on its own does not justify the all-clear.
