Nel ASA has given investors two sharply diverging signals in its third-quarter 2026 report. Order intake surged 339% year on year to NOK 253 million, yet revenue from customer contracts fell 63% to NOK 112 million over the same period. EBITDA came in at minus NOK 93 million. The order backlog stood at NOK 1.314 billion at quarter-end.

The gap between the two figures frames the central question hanging over the Norwegian hydrogen specialist: whether a swelling pipeline can be converted into billings quickly enough to narrow losses. Weak activity in the alkaline business was cited by the company as the drag on revenue, placing the core challenge squarely in day-to-day operations rather than in demand generation.

Leadership Transition Adds a Second Variable

Nel has named Morten Holum to succeed Håkon Volldal as chief executive, with a start date no later than May 1, 2027. Until then, CFO Kjell Christian Bjørnsen will serve as interim group CEO, while Torbjørn Berg, previously VP Finance, steps in as interim finance chief. The arrangement settles the handover mechanics; it does nothing by itself to move the earnings needle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

Running in parallel is a manufacturing build-out at Herøya, where Nel is assembling its first production line for next-generation pressure-driven alkaline electrolysers. The plan targets 500 MW of annual capacity by the end of 2026, followed by an upgrade to 1 GW in 2027. Those are capacity figures, not booked sales.

Not All Announcements Carry the Same Weight

Two project disclosures from roughly three weeks ago illustrate why the order book needs careful reading. Nel Hydrogen US booked an order worth about USD 12 million covering several containerised PEM electrolysers and associated services for an unnamed US technology company, with delivery slated for 2027. Separately, Nel and Rheinmetall signed a letter of intent to study the technical and commercial feasibility of decentralised synthetic fuel production. That document is exploratory: any next steps depend on mutual agreement and ongoing assessments, and no binding follow-on order can be inferred from it.

The distinction matters. A signed order and a feasibility study sit at opposite ends of the commitment spectrum, and neither should be confused with revenue already on the books.

What Investors Should Watch

Nel's ability to point to new projects is no longer in doubt. The test now lies in execution — turning bookings into billings while technical milestones and feasibility reviews prove their commercial worth. The stronger intake is an encouraging data point. It is not confirmation of a turnaround.
