Netflix's Next Act: A Mega-Merger Looms as Viewers Drift Toward YouTube

Netflix slid 11% over 30 days to EUR 62.42 as Envestnet units bought more shares, while Evercore and HSBC split on the stock.

Netflix closed Friday's session at EUR 62.42, capping a 30-day slide of 11% that has left the streaming giant valued at EUR 260.59 billion — and handed bargain-seeking institutions a reason to go shopping. Filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission show Envestnet Asset Management and Envestnet Portfolio Solutions both added to their Netflix positions during the second quarter of 2026. The former picked up more than 33,000 additional shares, while the latter lifted its stake by 7.7%.

The buying comes at a moment of unusual uncertainty, with sell-side opinion splitting sharply. Evercore ISI raised its price target from $100 to $110 on September 14 and reiterated an Outperform rating. HSBC moved the other way on Tuesday, downgrading the stock from Buy to Hold, citing intensifying competition from YouTube and rising content costs ahead.

A Rival of a Different Scale Takes Shape

Those content bills may soon climb higher still. Paramount Skydance reached a settlement Monday with California and eleven other US states that had sued to block its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery, according to Reuters. The court resolution removes a major regulatory obstacle, clearing the path for a combined entity with a deep rights library and a consolidated streaming footprint. For Netflix, the deal means a larger rival at precisely the moment competition for online video is forcing every platform to spend heavily just to hold subscriber numbers steady.

The Attention Economy Tilts

Yet the more immediate pressure may not come from a traditional studio at all. Nielsen data put YouTube's share of total US streaming watch time at a record 14.2%, while Netflix captured just 7.8% over the same period. The drift is most pronounced among 18- to 34-year-olds, a demographic advertisers pay a premium to reach, and it is pushing viewing hours toward free, ad-supported alternatives.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Netflix?

Netflix still logged more than 97 billion viewing hours in the first half of 2026 — a record volume — but the audience's attention is visibly migrating. Wells Fargo flagged an engagement risk, warning that watch time for the company's flagship series could fade meaningfully under its base-case scenario, and cut its price target from $80 to $57.

The stakes extend beyond retention. Softer viewing hours complicate monetization of the advertising-supported tier Netflix launched in late 2022, weighing on both ad pricing and inventory utilization.

Live Sports and a Packed Fall Slate

Management is countering with live content and proven franchises. The company already holds rights to the 2027 and 2031 World Cups, and sports broadcasts offer a reliable "campfire" audience that can be sold directly to advertisers. A crowded release calendar for the coming month reinforces the push: new seasons of hits including "Lupin" and "Nobody Wants This" arrive alongside the Ben Affleck thriller "Animals."

Netflix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Whether that lineup can sustainably lift viewing hours is the yardstick analysts will apply in the quarters ahead. The next hard data point comes on October 20, when Netflix reports third-quarter 2026 financial results after the US market close.
