Nokia Keeps Drone Unit Out of AURELIUS Deal as AI Spending Jitters Weigh on Shares

Nokia confirms its drone business stays in-house while the Enterprise Campus Edge deal with AURELIUS is signed, with completion expected in the first half of 2027.

Nokia moved this week to draw a clearer boundary around its private wireless business, confirming that its drone operations will stay in-house even as a broader slice of its enterprise portfolio heads to AURELIUS. The clarification, issued Wednesday, landed two days before a sector-wide technology selloff dragged the shares down 4.5% — a move the company has not tied to any specific announcement.

The stock's Friday retreat came as investors questioned the durability of spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, with debt-financed AI projects drawing particular scrutiny, according to AP. For Nokia, those sector-level doubts overlapped with a signed divestment and an approaching earnings date, leaving the share price to absorb sentiment that had little to do with the company's own disclosures.

Drone Business Stays Put — For Now

Nokia Drone Networks is not part of the Enterprise Campus Edge transaction, the company said, and the unit remains under strategic review. That status cuts both ways: it rules out neither a permanent home inside Nokia nor a future sale. The distinction matters because the divestment does not sweep up every activity connected to private networks.

Modular Private Wireless, by contrast, is included in the deal. Nokia added that it intends to keep deploying the platform alongside radio access network gear for larger-scale private networks, so the sale does not amount to a full exit from the segment. Ownership of a platform and its continued use in Nokia's own offerings are separate questions, and the drone business sits apart from the transfer altogether.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

A Deal Signed, Not Sealed

The Enterprise Campus Edge agreement with AURELIUS was struck Tuesday. Completion is expected in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and employee consultations. Nokia disclosed no financial terms — a detail that keeps the transaction's economic weight out of reach. The scope of what is being sold can now be assessed more precisely; the proceeds cannot.

That gap between strategic direction and financial value is the through-line for investors this week. A signed contract is not a closed one, and without a purchase price there is no way to quantify a cash inflow or earnings contribution.

Fiber and AI-RAN Fill Out the Pipeline

Alongside the portfolio reshuffle, Nokia unveiled a flexible PON network card for fiber networks on Monday. The card supports multiple PON generations at every connection point, with general availability slated for 2027.

Friday brought a separate agreement with SoftBank for a commercial AI-RAN field trial in Japan in 2027, running Nokia's anyRAN software on SoftBank's AITRAS platform. The arrangement covers a future test and should not be read as an already-completed commercial deployment.

October 22 Looms as the Real Scorecard

Nokia has scheduled its interim report for the third quarter and the January-to-September 2026 period for October 22, 2026. That release is the next fixed checkpoint at which the company's actual performance can be measured against the technology sector's more skeptical mood.

Until then, several threads run in parallel: a weak market backdrop, a divestment agreed but not completed, and continuing activity in private networks. The drone clarification chiefly guards against overreading the sale's scope — it offers no evidence of a full retreat from the fields involved. And the 4.5% decline should not be mistaken for proof of operational deterioration; the broad selling pressure explains the environment, while the coming figures must supply the company-specific verdict.
